Polychrome Delftware Wall Plaque with Grotesque Ornament, Delft, circa 1750

By Delft

Located in DELFT, NL

This antique eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware wall plaque is made of tin-glazed earthenware, also known as Delft faience. The shaped ceramic plaque is painted in blue, green, yellow, iron-red and manganese. Its raised, self-framing border is outlined in blue and decorated with continuous scrolling ornament against a green ground. The centre is painted with an elaborate symmetrical fantasy ornament composed of three winged masks, volutes, foliage, shell motifs and scale-patterned fields. The central mask supports a two-handled vase filled with flowers, with a bird in flight above the bouquet. The plaque is pierced at the top for suspension and was made specifically for wall display. The composition belongs to the broader tradition of French-inspired grotesque ornament that circulated in the Dutch Republic through prints by designers such as Jean Bérain and Daniel Marot. By the mid-eighteenth century, Delft painters had adapted this ornamental vocabulary freely, combining masks, scrolls and fantastical forms into highly decorative compositions. Delftware wall plaques held a distinct place within eighteenth-century Dutch interiors. In contemporary household inventories, they were sometimes recorded as porceleine schilderijen, or “porcelain paintings”, reflecting their function as ceramic counterparts to paintings on panel, canvas or copper. During the eighteenth century, Delft potters increasingly produced plaques in moulds with shaped outlines and raised borders, creating complete, self-framed decorative objects. With its unusual grotesque decoration, strong polychrome palette and pronounced shaped border, this antique Delft plaque...

Italian Creamware Trompe l’Oeil Duck Tureens, Pair, Nove di Bassano

By Nove di Bassano

Located in Downingtown, PA

Italian Creamware Trompe l’Oeil Duck Tureens, Pair, Nove di Bassano Circa 1786–1802 Nove di Bassano, Veneto, Italy. Pasquale Antonibon factory, period of Giovanni Maria Baccin. Each of these two soup tureens is modeled as a duck at rest upon a low oval mound base, the body divided horizontally so that the upper half, with the head and neck, lifts away as the cover and seats into the lower basin. The modeling is naturalistic throughout, the plumage and the curve of the bill worked in crisp relief, and the pair are left entirely undecorated so that nothing competes with the sculpture. They are made in terraglia, the refined cream-colored earthenware developed in Italy in emulation of the Queen’s Ware perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in Staffordshire. Terraglia all’inglese reached the Veneto in 1780, when Carlo Vicentini del Giglio introduced it at Vicenza, and Giovanni Maria Baccin took up its manufacture at Nove from 1786, working calcium and magnesium carbonate and silica into the plastic clay; gypsum quarried at Asiago gave the body its characteristic ivory tone, which the lustrous clear glaze here carries across the whole surface. Tureens in the form of birds, animals and fruit belong to a European fashion for the trompe l’oeil table...

Early 20th Century French Hand-Painted Quimper Oval Faïence Wall Platter

By Quimper Faience Pottery

Located in Dallas, TX

This vibrant antique ceramic platter was crafted in Brittany, France, circa 1920, and exemplifies the lively spirit of Quimper faïence. Oval in shape with a scalloped rim, the tin-glazed earthenware piece is hand-painted with an elaborate Breton scene depicting villagers in traditional costume gathered in joyous celebration, dancing, conversing, and playing music in a lush countryside setting. Their colorful garments and expressive gestures convey the warmth and festivity of rural life in turn-of-the-century France. The central tableau is framed by a richly textured cobalt blue border adorned with hand-painted floral and foliate motifs in golden ochre and soft cream tones, echoing the decorative language of Quimper’s celebrated ceramic tradition. The back shows signs of age and wear appropriate to its period, and the piece is unsigned but consistent with works produced by Henriot or HB Quimper workshops. Antique Quimper pottery...

Polychrome Delftware Wall Plaque with Bird and Flower Basket, Delft, circa 1750

By Delft

Located in DELFT, NL

Polychrome Delftware Wall Plaque with Bird and Flower Basket Delft, circa 1750 This antique eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware wall plaque is made of tin-glazed earthenware and painted in blue, green, yellow, iron-red and manganese. The lozenge-shaped plaque has a raised, self-framing border and is pierced at the top with two holes for suspension. The centre is painted with an exotic bird perched among flowering branches rising from a rectangular basket. The flowers and foliage are enclosed within a shaped cartouche outlined in yellow and green scrollwork. Large stylised flower heads interrupt the surrounding blue diaper-patterned ground, while the outer border is decorated with continuous scrolling ornament in blue, yellow and iron-red. The combination of an exotic bird, abundant flowers and geometric patterning reflects the continuing influence of Chinese and Japanese porcelain on mid-eighteenth-century Delftware. Delft painters did not simply reproduce Asian designs, but combined individual motifs with European cartouches, scrollwork and shaped borders to create new decorative compositions. Wall plaques of this type were produced specifically for display. In contemporary household inventories they were sometimes described as porceleine schilderijen, or “porcelain paintings”, reflecting their role as ceramic counterparts to framed paintings. By the eighteenth century, Delft potters increasingly formed plaques in moulds with pronounced outlines and integrated decorative borders, creating complete, self-framed objects for the interior. With its strong polychrome palette, lively bird and flower decoration and compact 26 cm format, this shaped Delft plaque...

Antique Saint-Clément Majolica Fruit Dessert Service

By Saint-Clément

Located in LA CIOTAT, FR

This delightful set of French majolica tableware was produced by the celebrated Saint-Clément faience manufactory during the late 19th-century. The set comprises five dessert plates and a matching serving platter, all richly decorated in relief with an abundance of fruit and foliage inspired by nature. Each dessert plate features clusters of ripe peaches framed by finely molded leaves, while the larger serving platter displays an attractive arrangement of peaches, strawberries, cherries, grapes, and flowering branches. The soft palette of creamy whites, greens, pinks, and golden yellows is enhanced by a lustrous glaze, creating the vibrant and highly decorative appearance that made French barbotine ceramics so popular during the Victorian era. Founded in Lorraine in the 18th-century, the Saint-Clément manufactory became particularly renowned for its majolica wares, producing richly modeled pieces inspired by fruits, vegetables, flowers, and natural forms. These charming creations remain highly sought after today by collectors of French faience and majolica...
