In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847 the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today. From its central London location Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early specialty was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. The main competitors at the time were H.J. Cave & Sons. Asprey was recognised for its expertise when it won a gold medal for its dressing cases at the International Exhibition of 1862 but lost out to its rivals, H.J. Cave & Sons in 1867. The company consolidated its position through acquisitions. In 1859 Asprey absorbed Edwards, an award winning maker of dressing cases and holder of a Royal Warrant. The company also purchased the Alfred Club at 22 Albemarle Street, which backed on to the New Bond Street store and meant that Asprey now had entrances on two of London's most fashionable streets. In 1862, Asprey was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria. The Prince of Wales, later to be crowned Edward VII, granted another Royal Warrant. In 1953, for the coronation of Elizabeth II, Asprey paid homage with the Asprey Coronation Year Gold Collection, which featured a dessert, coffee and liqueur service in 18-carat gold and weighed almost 27 pounds. In April 1953, it went on show in the New Bond Street store and subsequently toured the United States. As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmiths, goldsmiths, jewellers and watchmakers including Ernest Betjeman, the father of the distinguished poet John Betjeman, one of the most highly regarded craftsman and designers of his day. In the twenties, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. Asprey cigarette cases became collectable amongst young sophisticates who delighted in its other modern products, including travel clocks, safety razors and automatic pencil sharpeners. Asprey Jewellery...

Antique Irish Tipperary Waterford Glass Cut Crystal Georgian Centerpiece Bowl 18
Located in Dublin, Ireland
An impressive George II hand cut full led Irish Crystal Pedestal “Kettle Drum” Bowl of circular outline and unusually large proportions. Made by the Old Waterford Glass Company, County Tipperary in Ireland. Late Eighteenth, early Nineteenth Century. The heavy gauge circular wavy cut rim with a band of richly cut diamond and chevron cut pattern. The lower bowl area with scale cut detailing, raised on a single ring socle stem above a square thick spreading pedestal, underneath with “lemon squeeze” foot detail. Condition: Good untouched condition with no losses, except for one tight short crack, see two images which clearly show this imperfection, wonderful age wear underneath base. Typically unmarked as Georgian pieces were not. *Stunning and rare example of a piece of Irish Georgian History. The asking price reflects the imperfection. Wonderful rare “grey” tint to crystal, so typical of Eighteenth-Century Irish pieces. Diameter: (top rim, an impressive) 9” (23cm). Height: 8.25" (21cm). Depth: (square base) 3.5" (9cm). Location: Dublin City, Ireland. Affordable fixed charge Worldwide Store to door shipping. The history of Irish Hand Cut Crystal goes back to the late 17th century. George Ravenscroft started the tradition in 1676. The glassmaker added lead oxide to the silicates that make up the molten glass. The process achieved a softness that allowed the glass to be blown and carved while remaining hard and clear as it cooled. The first crystal factory in Ireland opened in County Tyrone in 1771. The Creation of Waterford Crystal The Waterford Crystal we know today back in 1783 with George and William Penrose. Their vision was to “create the finest quality crystal for drinking vessels and decorative objects of beauty for the home.” The Penrose brothers sought the expertise of renowned glassmaker John Hill in 1785. Hill that began the process of polishing the glass to give the unique Waterford Crystal shine now known the world over. Hill left Waterford in 1788 after a major disagreement with the Penrose brothers. Waterford cut glass...

Lalique, "Smile of the Angel" Champagne Glasses (16), France 1980
Located in PARIS, FR
Superb service of sixteen champagne glasses "Smile of the Angel" also titled "Angel of Reims" designed by Marc Lalique for the Lalique Maison. In very good condition. One glass with a small chip on the lip. Dimensions in cm (H x D): 20.4 x 7 Secure shipping. The Lalique Maison was created by René Lalique who was one of the greatest artists of his time, whether as a jeweler or master glassmaker. He marked the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with his unique style. Lalique is recognized as one of the most important jewelry designers and glass maker of the French Art Nouveau period, creating innovative pieces for Samuel Bing's new store in Paris, Maison de l'Art Nouveau. He began exhibiting his work under his own name as early as 1894, notably at the Salon des artistes français, 1897 and 1898. The great glassmaker Émile Gallé discovered him at the first one and praised him highly. His stand at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris was a great success. While keeping sources of inspiration from the Art Nouveau woman, fauna and flora - including the peacock, various insects and sometimes a fantastic bestiary - he innovated by using materials barely used for jewelry at the time: glass, enamel, leather, horn, mother of pearl, often preferring semi-precious stones to precious stones. The introduction of volume in jewelry is facilitated by his knowledge in modeling. He designed his models, having them made by a team of chisellers, sculptors and enamellers that he carefully recruited. Many women from the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the entertainment world began to wear his extraordinary jewelry, such as the Marquise Arconati-Visconti, the Countess of Béarn, Madame Waldeck-Rousseau, and Sarah Bernhardt, for whom he created a stage costume in 1902 for the revival of the play Théodora at the Sarah-Bernhardt Theater. Lalique was the only modern artist whose client and friend Calouste Gulbenkian became. Gulbenkian acquired the famous Pectoral à la libellule (circa 1897-1898), a masterpiece much admired at the 1900 World's Fair, which he lent to the tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt. After the end of the First World War, Lalique's colorful and fantastic jewelry were no longer in fashion. The creator sensed this and decided to convert to the Art Deco style through glassware in 1920. Thus, the neo-classical and geometric Art Deco replaces Art Nouveau. According to Olivier Mauny, former CEO of Lalique, his creations paved the way for an industrialization of art objects, because one of the best ways to include luxury and aesthetics in everyday life is to make everyday objects. He will create many objects such as vases, cups, candlesticks, perfume bottles, radiator caps for the Citroën 5CV (1925), decorations for the restaurant cars of the Côte d'Azur Pullman Express (1929), decorations for the dining room of the first class of the Normandie liner...

"Abundance" Lalique Crystal
Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI
"Abundance" was produced in Circa 2008. This magnificent design was produced in a limited edition of 99, this being number 47. The foot has the etched trademark signature with the copyright symbol: Lalique France. The piece is both clear and frosted silky crystal with a wide shallow footed bowl molded with a flower on the interior and fruit and foliage molded on the baluster. This is a unique and extraordinary Art Nouveau design. It measures 15.125'' H x 15'' Dia. René Lalique’s name is synonymous with French Art Nouveau decorative arts. Born in 1860 he first began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881, but pursuing increasingly more innovative experimentation in glass commencing around 1883, he eventually created crystal pieces. Early works used the familiar "lost wax" technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production. Without the hand-formed pieces and unique molds, the individual uniqueness of each example of Lalique glass came to an end. The success of this venture resulted in the opening of his own glassworks at Combs-la-Ville in 1909. During the art nouveau period, Lalique was well known for a wide variety of objects including perfume bottles, vases, inkwells, decorative boxes, and bookends. Lalique glass is lead based, either mold blown or pressed. Characteristically the glass is crystal in combination with acid-etched relief. In addition to vases, clocks, automobile mascots...
