19th Century Russian Silver Gilt Niello Enamel Beaker

An exceptional, fine and impressive Russian silver gilt and niello enamel beaker, an addition to our Russian silverware collection. This exceptional antique Russian silver gilt beaker has a cylindrical, tapering form. The surface of this antique beaker is embellished with a fine niello enamel scene depicting a structural rooftop skyline behind a towered brick wall, incorporating cloud designs on the matte textured upper portion. The ornamentation to the beaker is flanked with two opposing chevron style borders. The upper rim of the beaker is encircled with an applied moulded border. The hallmarks struck to the beaker include: Maker's mark: ?? (Andrey Shikhin / ?????? ?????, Tver) Assay mark: ??, 1827 (Nikolay Dubrovin/??????? ????????) An exceptional, fine and impressive vintage Russian silver gilt and polychrome cloisonné enamel tea strainer; an addition to our silver tea ware collection. This exceptional vintage Russian silver gilt and polychrome cloisonné enamel tea strainer has a circular rounded form. The bowl of the tea strainer is embellished with a pierced concentric circular design, encircled with Dual bands of white enamel bead motifs to the rim. The tapering handle is embellished with an impressive cloisonné enamel floral and foliate design in tones of blue and green, accented with further bands of white enamel circular motifs encompassing the concave thumb piece. The enamel segments are encompassed with applied silver paralleling rope twist ornamentation. This fine Russian silver enamel tea strainer retains the original gilding. Columbian Home Products purchased the cookware division of General Houseware Corporation in 1998. GHC purchased the Columbian Enameling and Stamping Company in 1968, which got its start in Terre Haute, IN in 1902. Columbian Enameling began in Bellaire, Ohio in 1871. In 1880 Bellaire Stamping Company began experimenting with enameling. The 1893 World’s Fair, “The Columbian Exposition,” was held in Chicago. This prompted the Bellaire company to change their name to Columbian Enameling in 1894. Due to a fire, Columbian moved to Terre Haute, IN in 1902 and changed their name to Columbian Enameling and Stamping Company. Consumer demand for enamel cooking utensils grew during the early 1900s.
