Royal Crown Derby Part Dessert Service, Turquoise with Flower Garlands, 1916
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful part dessert service made by Royal Crown Derby in 1916. The service consists of one serving dish and ten plates, and is decorated with beautiful scalloped rims in turquoise and gilt, delicate flower garlands and a very find flower spray on each item.
The Derby Porcelain factory has its roots in the late 1740s, when André Planché, a Walloon Huguenot refugee, started making simple porcelain toys shaped like animals. Local entrepreneur William Duysbury took an interest in his skills and worked with him to improve the quality of his wonderfully shaped items. Together they laid the foundations of what would become a very refined tradition of figure making at Derby. In 1769 Duysbury bought up the bankrupted Chelsea factory, incorporating their reputation for high quality figures, vases and tableware; this combination of traditions, porcelain making skills, sophisticated clients and available work people created one of the best porcelain factories of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The factory went through many ups and downs in the 19th Century and was completely re-constituted in the late 19th Century; today it is one of the very few factories still operative.
This plate is a fine example of the Edwardian style with its grace, fine painting and delicate gilt. The pattern has similarities to the famous "Royal Antoinette...

Royal Doulton Porcelain Pair of Plates, Fruit Paintings by C B Brough, 1903
Located in London, GB
This is a stunning pair of plates made by Royal Doulton in 1903. The plates have beautiful turquoise and raised gilt borders and very accomplished fruit paintings in the centre by the well known painter Charles Brayford Brough.
The Royal Doulton factory was first founded in 1815 in Vauxhall in London, and in 1826 moved to Lambeth. In 1882 it opened a factory in Burslem, Staffordshire. The factory made a very wide range of stoneware and porcelain - from simple useful wares to very decorative items. Today the Royal Doulton brand is owned by a Finnish holding company that also owns the Wedgwood, Waterford and Minton brands, however it does not have its own independent factory anymore.
These plates would have been part of a very expensive dessert service, and are decorated in the style of the famous Royal Worcester dessert...

Royal Worcester Pair of Porcelain Vases, Blush Ivory, Flowers, Edwardian, 1907
Located in London, GB
This is a very fine pair of small vases made by Royal Worcester in 1907. The vases have a "blush ivory" ground with beautiful overlaid enamel flowers.
The original Worcester factory was founded in the mid 18th century and belongs to the group of famous pioneering potteries in Britain. It went through various changes and take overs, and in the mid 19th Century it merged with Chamberlains and Grainger, both earlier split-offs, taking the new name "Royal Worcester". The factory distinguished itself with its extremely high quality of artwork, hiring the best artists and always coming up with very vivid designs full of flowers, birds and fruits. It was in operation until the early 21st century but eventually succumbed to the changing times.
These vases are in the "blush ivory" style, which became popular in the late 19th century and ceased around 1914. The blush ivory style was based on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and Aesthetic Movement in Britain, creating designs based on natural shapes rather than the familiar ornamental shapes from the Victorian times. The production process was complex; items received a glossy glaze on the inside, and a matt glaze on the outside. Colours were achieved by spraying an apricot-coloured glaze near the rims with the newly invented "aerograph machine" - this was one of the first examples of air brushing!
Decorations were often designed by master artists and then printed in outline and sometimes painted by hand; the colours to be applied by hand in raised or overlaid enamels like you can see on these vases. There was heavy gilding involved. All of this took 5 firings, a lot of time, materials and 22Kt gold, so you can imagine that these items were expensive.
These small vases are very elegant and have exuberant bouquets of typically British wildflowers, such as clovers, buttercup and forget-me-nots.
The vases have the green Royal Worcester...
