Vintage hand carved sperm whale by Nantucket artist William J. Dickson, 1971, a smoothly carved pine sperm whale with upraised flukes and open mouth exposing teeth, mounted on weathered barn board plank, signed and dated W.J. Dickson, 1971 on the reverse. William Dickson was born in Hartford, CT in 1932. He had a B.S. in art education from the University of Hartford, cum laude, an M.A. from Trinity College in art education, and M.A.E. from the University of Hartford in educational administration. He taught for the Hartford school system at Barnard Brown and Hartford High School and served as a resource teacher in art education for Hartford public schools. He spent many years as an award-winning professional photographer on Nantucket Island, MA and had a studio there. He was well known and respected in his field and was a long-time member of the Artist Association of Nantucket.
