More than a kilo of sterling silver was needed to create this stunning rectangular tabletop box. Worked with the very complicated guilloche technique, it was then enamelled at high heat with translucent enamel to make the superb workmanship shine through. The fine rectangular miniature cm. 7.5 x 10.7 on vegetable ivory. The small masterpiece handmade by the painter Anna Maria Manfriani reproduces the famous portrait of Empress Eugenia de Montijo, by the painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The unenamelled sterling silver parts were then gilded with a 24-carat galvanic bath. In Art Nouveau style, with a “lost” zip, i.e. semi-invisible. Dimensions cm. 15 x 18 x 3.5. Weight gr. 1095. Antique Burmese Gilt Lacquer Sadaik Manuscript Chest on an Associated Stand, late 19th century. The chest is constructed of teak covered in lacquer and gold leaf with a hinged lid and detailed decoration on four sides. The high relief thayo lacquer depicts narrative scenes from the Jataka tales, stories of the previous lives of the Buddha. Each tableau bordered by a tendril vine frame has reserve cartouches of birds or figures within. The narrative scenes are varied with a basic ground consisting of a field of linear components representing water and upright tendrils representing rice paddies. It is evident that a great journey is taking place with components such as wandering figures, elephants, deer, lions, serpents, tree spirits, foliage, trees and palaces rendered in relief. The elaborate high relief thayo lacquer is molded and modeled of a putty of lacquer sap mixed with clay, saw-dust, and/or ash. The interior and back are red lacquered. The large lid with overhanging lip is hinged at the back and a later interior brass side arm to prevent the lid from falling back. The added French style hardwood stand with cabriole legs, apron and shell designs appears to be of the same time period or possibly later. Condition: Minor lacquer losses and cracks around the lid frame. The gold leaf on the lid rubbed revealing the red lacquered ground. Other minor losses and restorations commensurate with age and use otherwise fine condition. Late 19th century. Size Overall: 38.75 in. high x 41 in. wide x 26.5 in. deep (98.5 x 104.2 x 67.3cm) Sadaik measures: 25 x 38.5 x 25.75 (63.5 x 97.7 x 65.4cm) Approximate Weight: 60 lbs. (27.2kg). According to his advertisements, he traded in wood carving, silverware, embroidery, ivory carving, silk and curios. This lucrative business thrived in collecting local artworks and selling them to the British. This business grew rapidly and soon opened branches in Rangoon, Colombo & London. An Important French Empire Ormolu Mantel Clock “Lettre d’Amour,” Attributed to François-Louis Savart, Paris The clock is formed with a rectangular case rising from a shaped plinth base set on four flattened bun feet. The base displays a continuous frieze cast in relief with two sheep flanking a central urn, framed by scrolling foliage at each end. Above, the main case supports a circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals and two winding apertures, enclosed within a beaded ormolu bezel. Beneath the dial, a rectangular panel is cast with a reclining male figure in a landscape setting, accompanied by trees. To the left, a female figure is seated on a cushion supported by an X form empire stool, her body turned toward the dial. She raises one hand toward her face while a bird rests on her knee, and she holds a circular medallion bearing a profile portrait. To the right, a tripod table stands on three supports formed as winged griffins with lion heads and clawed feet. The table surface holds a writing box with an open lid, a quill, and a candlestick. The surfaces throughout are finished in gilt, with visible chasing across the figures, drapery, and ornamental borders. The clock is attributed to François Louis Savart, a bronzier active in Paris. Savart produced objects in gilt bronze including clocks, candelabra, and decorative mounts. He maintained a workshop in Paris where he developed figural clock models incorporating classical motifs and narrative subjects. Comparable models associated with Savart include figural compositions with seated female figures, auxiliary furniture elements, and narrative relief panels, reflecting established design types within Parisian bronze production. Savart’s workshop operated within the Paris bronze industry, where cast ormolu objects were produced using sand casting followed by chasing and gilding. The construction of this clock case reflects the use of multiple cast components assembled into a unified structure, including separately cast figures, furniture elements, and applied relief panels. The inclusion of tripod tables, X form seating, and winged supports corresponds to design sources drawn from Greco Roman models that were adapted in Empire period decorative arts. The precise casting, crisp chasing, and consistent gilt surface across the figures, mounts, and relief panels indicate a high level of production quality, with the complexity of the assembled components supporting its desirability among Paris ormolu figural clocks...
