Peter Buchman "Now Showing”, Voice-Over Paintings Series, 2025

By Peter Buchman

Located in New York, NY

Contemporary New York artist Peter Buchman's 'Now Showing' is created using laser-cut plexiglass, acrylic medium, and enamel on wood. It's part of his Voice-Over series, in which the artist gathers linguistic phrases to immortalize the valuable contributions of other cultures to the American Diaspora. To describe Buchman's word paintings as 'A Figure of Speech' is an understatement of the profound soulfulness they embody. They bear the marks of the artist's hand but also carry the collective spirit of those who came before him. These words derive from familiar phrases, music albums, his unique brand of irony, and the very essence of the human form. 'Now Showing' draws inspiration from Film Noir, a genre that held a profound influence on Peter's film and cinematic journey. The strident and punctual dialogue always fascinated him, along with the black and white director's perspectives. As an artist who spent hours drawing and sketching in pencil, the dramatic black and white hardened scenes just gripped him. He wanted smoke and spit and to rough something up. He wanted to emulate those textures, those scenes, that gut reaction with danger but in a poetic sense. The work reflects someone who is under interrogation, spilling their guts out, or just spilling the beans. It's a collection of phrases Peter unearthed or scratched out from movies or vintage pulp...

Jennifer Printz "Quietus II" Prints, Graphite and Inks on Antique Paper, 2017

By Jennifer D. Printz

Located in New York, NY

Contemporary artist Jennifer Printz "Quietus II" series of six prints blends photography, graphite, and Epson Ultrachrome inks on antique papers. The work is matted and framed in wood, protected with anti-static, non-glare Plexiglass glazing. Jennifer Printz, an artist with a love for the poetic, carefully selects titles for her pieces and exhibitions to evoke multiple meanings. One such significant title in her work is "Quietus," symbolizing resolution and rest. She chose this title to reflect the artwork's creation during a sabbatical, a period of rejuvenation and tranquility. "Quietus" also represents her core artistic motivation – emphasizing the importance of stillness and calm in life. In the hustle and bustle of life, we often miss out on essential experiences unless we allow ourselves to be quiet and introspective. Jennifer believes that finding solace is crucial, and she invites viewers to appreciate its significance. Her work provides a meditative space, offering a brief moment of quiet reflection. In 2017, she was interviewed by Jenine Culligan, the director at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University, where her solo exhibition sabbatical work was titled "An Almost Unnoticed Quietus." This title cleverly connects "quietus" with "almost unnoticed," highlighting the themes of meditation and mindfulness. Through these practices, Jennifer uncovers profound aspects of our world and emotions often overlooked in our hurried lives. Meditation has taught her to appreciate the moments when we are on the verge of giving up, as these are often when unexpected greatness can unfold. C. 1625 After Antoine de Pluvinel, "Henry IV, Mounted", Hand Colored Engraving

Located in Morristown, NJ

Early 17th century, French hand colored equestrian engraving. After Antoine de Pluvinel (French, 1552-1620), "Henry IV, Mounted", figure 42 from "L'Instruction du Roy en l'Exercice de Monter a Cheval", c. 1625, matted and framed under UF-3 plexiglass (blocks approx. 97% of UV) , gallery label verso. Figures from this publication have sold at Christie's. Those were not hand colored. A highly detailed engraving with the French King Henry 1V the central figure. Mounted on horseback, Le Roy (the King) is watched by no less than 10 courtiers some of whom are mounted on horseback, all of which are named in the engraving. Antoine de Pluvinel (1552, Crest, Dauphine - 24 August 1620) was the first of the French riding masters, and has had great influence on modern dressage. He wrote L’Instruction du Roy en L'exercice de Monter à Cheval ("instruction of the King in the art of riding"), was tutor to King Louis XIII, and is credited with the invention of using two pillars, as well as using shoulder-in to increase suppleness. In 1594, Pluvinel founded the "Academie d'Equitation" near what is now Place des Pyramides. There, the French nobility was trained not only in horsemanship, but also in all the accomplishments (dancing, fashionable dressing, etc.) It can be said that Pluvinel's influence on the aristocracy lasted from the late 16th century to the 17th century. Richelieu, the future Prime Minister of King Louis XIII attended the Academie; so did William, Duke of Cavendish. Pluvinel's book was published posthumously by the Flemish engraver Crispijn van de Passe II and the royal valet de chambre...

Gaetano Missaglia Ceiling Lamp with Lampshades in Lucite Plexiglass 1970s Italy

By Gaetano Missaglia

Located in Cascina, Pisa

Mid-Century Modern ceiling lamp with five lampshades in chromed metal and lucite plexiglass. Designed by Gaetano Missaglia and manufactured in Italy during the 1970s. Acrylic, also known as the brand names lucite or Plexiglas, was developed in the 1930s. Its scientific name is Poly(methyl methacrylate), or PMMA, and it is a type of thermoplastic, which is a plastic Material that is moldable at extremely hot temperatures and solid once cool. The company that created acrylic licensed it in two ways; first as Plexiglas to be a glass replacement, and afterwards as lucite for commercial uses in 1937. Commercially, lucite was used in jewelry, handbags, and cosmetics packaging. Plexiglas, in comparison, was often used for larger projects, such as aircraft windows, lenses for lighthouses, and aquariums. Before it was used widespread for furniture, acrylic was being utilized for military purposes, as wartime was quickly approaching. During World War 2 (1939-1945), the country’s resources were mostly directed to military uses, and acrylic was no different. Acrylic, as Plexiglas, was used to help the military, including as airplane windshields and submarine periscopes. Despite that, some people began using acrylic to make furniture. In 1939, Helena Rubinstein, a wildly successful cosmetics mogul and art collector, commissioned to Ladislas Medgyesan an entire suite of acrylic furnishings for her NYC apartment, including an illuminated acrylic bed in her bedroom and acrylic chairs for business meetings. When the war ended in 1945, acrylic was ready to be worked with in design on a larger scale. The company licensed lucite widely, making it much more available across every industry. It steadily gained momentum in the world of design, with artists and designers being inspired by its moldability and translucense. In 1959, French designer Erwine Laverne told a New York Times reporter, “The most important element in rooms is people, not furniture,” speaking to the growing popularity and importance of the clear furniture. But acrylic furniture hit its peak popularity in the 1960s and ‘70s, as more acrylic furniture designers and artists entered the scene. Glass artists began to take more of an interest in acrylics, especially taking advantage of acrylic’s flexibility, light weight, cost, and capacity to refract and filter light. Designers like John Mascheroni and Charles Hollis Jones, known as the Godfather of lucite, created iconic pieces that still look beautiful in today’s modern home. Designers and artists alike loved the durability and look of acrylic. As Charles Hollis Jones put in an interview with Ravelin Magazine, “I worked a lot with lucite when I first started. When I worked with the company that wanted me to go to Europe, they had me work with glass, ceramic, enamel. I went over there and the glass was always in the wrong color and it always broke. When the earthquakes came, I got visual proof of that. I like to work with acrylic because it does two wonderful things that glass doesn’t. It’s shatter-proof, first of all. I can also change the microstructure and make it one-tenth the strength of steel. And the most important thing it does: it carries light. Glass reflects light. lucite holds it and carries it. If you play with it, you can make a lens to look at something in space. It’s that good. It’s purer than crystal.” In fact, acrylic was often used in chandeliers as well, mixed with other materials to make incredible striking designs that would have been much more difficult to achieve with glass. Recently, acrylic furniture has once again risen in popularity. While many of the designs are timeless, more designers are coming forward with acrylic furniture for the modern home. In 2002, designer Philippe Starck introduced his Louis Ghost Chair, and the trend has only grown from there. You’ll now find entirely acrylic pieces of home furnishings and accessories, as well as acrylic-detailed furniture all across the market.
