Antique Rowing Oar - 1st Trinity College, Oxford, 1874
A fine and original Oxford University presentation rowing oar, dating from 1874, attributed to Trinity College Boat Club.
This full-length oar, crafted by E. Ayling of Vauxhall, London, measures over 12 feet and is a traditional example of the commemorative oars presented to Oxford college rowing crews. It features gilt calligraphy and a hand-painted heraldic shield of 1st Trinity College Boat Club - depicting a lion and three crowns, affectionately nicknamed "The Cat and Buns."
The signwriting remains in excellent condition, produced by R. R. Royston of Cambridge a noted craftsman of the period, with elegant gilt script listing the names and weights of the 1874 crew.
