Pair of art and craft chairs in solid wood

A large and masculine 19th century arched fireplace surround carved in rich vareated Verde Antico marble, a generous double thick bullnose shelf rests above a stepped and moulded under cornice, supported by a raised scalloped fluted keystone, and flanked by a pair of large spandrels each carved with relief shaped fielded panels and moulding. Quarter round side returns connect to deep revels, all resting on large shaped foot blocks with Belgian Black Marble insert cappings, a splendid and exceptional example shown with its original highlighted arch cast iron insert. Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), made by Guthrie and Wells. A Glasgow School Arts and Crafts stained green cypress wood wardrobe, with white opaque textured square glass details to the top. The central door and a large lower drawer with brass heart escutcheons and brass stylized foliate hinges and handles. The simple case construction and stained green cypress wood and grouping of square details are typical of Mackintosh's early work for Guthrie and Wells including items bought by William Davidson for his house Gladsmuir, Kilmacolm. The brass cabinet fittings are identical on a number of pieces, see Billcliffe, p. 33, fig. 1895.2 and 1895.3 for a washstand and dressing table designed by Mackintosh, also made by Guthrie and Wells. Also a white painted wardrobe/compactum. The overhanging cornice has been adapted with hinged flaps to move it up a narrow staircase. This is a beautiful Caithness glass paperweight named "Ascension", designed by Alastair Macintosh and dating to the last quarter of the 20th century. The paperweight has a cone, egg shaped form, having colours including blue swirl with orange net to the centre and medium bubble and smaller controlled bubbles, making a very distinctive design. The Caithness Glass Company began making paperweights circa 1962 Paul Ysart,Colin Terriss,Alistair Macintosh,Margot Thomson Inns Burn where some of Caithness makers designers of Caithness glass paperweights. The makers mark is etched to the base with CAITHNESS ASCENSION SCOTLAND and a scratched edition number alongside as per the images. This paperweight weighs about 500 gram. Caithness glass The company was founded in 1961 by Robin Sinclair and initially only made bowls, vases and drinking glasses.
