While originally made as souvenir items this ruler also provides a real insight to postal history. What a handsome chest of drawers! It’s a long time since we last offered a Scottish chest of drawers and this one is a beauty. The piece is built in two sections, necessary for negotiating narrow passages and staircases. The upper section has three deep drawers with the flow of their serpentine fronts unbroken by knobs or pulls. Instead the drawer fronts have finger pulls carved into their undersides. These are flanked by serpentine corbels with a deep flute in the center. The 6.5"high splashback is removable, making the height 48.5".

Born in Scotland in 1949, John Bathgate grew up in the rolling Scottish Border country. His art education followed an apprenticeship style training with the artist and teacher Robert Fraser. By 1979 he had joined the “Lothian Group” of artists and had begun to exhibit in and around Edinburgh, along with establishing his first studio. He now lives in the north west of Skye, which looks out on Loch Bracadale, with views south to Rum and Canna, the Cuillins and west to MacLeods Tables. The quality of light here and the constantly changing weather provide all the inspiration for many of the paintings produced.
