1990s Vintage Kartell “FPE” Chair by Ron Arad — Fantastic Plastic Elastic — Mid-

By Ron Arad

Located in San Gabriel, CA

Designer: Ron Arad Model: FPE (Fantastic, Plastic, Elastic) Manufacturer: Kartell, Milan, Italy Era: Late 1990s / Early 2000s (original production run 1999–mid 2000s) The FPE chair is one of Ron Arad’s most iconic plastic-and-metal designs. It uses an ingenious method: a single sheet of injection-molded polypropylene is slid flat into double-barrelled aluminum extrusions, then bent into shape under pressure — creating a light, flexible but structurally sound chair without screws, glue, or welding. This combination of industrial engineering + sculptural form + stackable practicality helped make the FPE a landmark of late-20th-century design. It’s part of major museum collections worldwide (including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York). • Original vintage Kartell production (not reproduction) • Polypropylene seat/back + extruded aluminum frame • Signature flexible-seat technology — seat/back remain slightly flexible until someone sits, then lock rigid under weight. • Lightweight & stackable (up to 6–8 chairs) — ideal for small spaces or flexible interiors. • Great for lovers of postmodern / space-age / contemporary design; fits gallery-style interiors, modern apartments, creative studios. Dimensions (approx / official): 31¼″ H × 17″ W × 22″ D (79.4 × 43.2 × 55.9 cm) Materials: Injection-molded polypropylene (seat), Extruded aluminum (frame) Condition & Authenticity Notes • Good vintage condition — seat/back show light wear typical of age/use (please refer to photos). • Underside of seat shows original manufacturing stamp: “Kartell — FPE...

Varius by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona, 2022 The chair played yesterday and will play into tomorrow. Like a tuned Violin, Stradivarius. Its critical acclaim and commercial success kickstarted a new era of contemporary Spanish design. Loved for decades, the design is considered and remarkably adaptable. Stackable. Strong. Lasting. It stayed in tune. Based on the Stradivarius Violin but built to fit everywhere. This chair was brought back for its new finishes and styles. It is staying because it has a character of its own, now fit for every floor. The Varius plays again. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva...
