Fine Regency Ebonised and Gilt Heightened Chaise Longue in the Manner of Thomas

Fine Regency Ebonised and Gilt Heightened Chaise Longue in the Manner of Thomas

Located in Dublin 8, IE

Fine Regency ebonized and gilt heightened chaise longue in the manner of Thomas Hope Early 19th century Regency ebonised and gilt heightened chaise longue in the manner of Thomas Hope, the reeded show-wood frame with twin scroll ends with flower head motif and caned back, satin striped upholstery on splayed legs, terminating in lions paw foot cappings and casters. Almost certainly acquired by Rev. Daniel Shipton, during the remodelling of Crawley House, circa 1806 and by descent to his daughter Charlotte Orlebar, (nee Shipton) and by descent through the Orlebar Family, Crawley House, Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire. Crawley House was built for Rev. Daniel Shipton in 1777 with a legacy from his wife Temperance’s family: Daniel and Temperence’s daughter and heir Charlotte married Robert Charles Orlebar in 1807 and thus the estate came into the possession of the Orlebar family. It was reworked in 1806, when the drawing room was decorated (and presumably furnished) in the Egyptian style, including the upper part of the walls divided into panel with a border of sphinxes and mummies, a scheme recorded in the surviving account book. Surviving accounts detailing Rev. Shipton’s expenditure on the 1806 renovations and extensions at Crawley house deposited with the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service, provide great detail about internal furnishings through each room in the new part of the house in turn: Library; yellow bedroom; blue room; green bedroom; dining parlour and drawing room. Many payments were made to fashionable London firms including to Wedgewood, to Parker the famous glass manufacturer, £119.2s 11ds, to Shout for Statuary, and notably, the very large sum of £915.0s. 11d to Collier the upholsterer, considering the house cost in the region of £1,000 when it was built in 1777-8, one can only presume that Collier supplied all the furniture from as-yet-unknown London...

Fine Paint Decorated Gilt Over Red Bole Green Silk Maison Jansen Attr. Settee

By Maison Jansen

Located in Swedesboro, NJ

**Maison Jansen (Attributed) French Directoire Style Painted and Gilt Settee, Circa 1920s** This exquisite **paint-decorated and gilt-accented French Directoire style settee** is attributed to the legendary Parisian design house **Maison Jansen**, founded in 1880 by Jean-Henri Jansen. Elegantly proportioned, the piece features a beautifully carved beechwood frame with subtle **gilded detailing**, fluted legs, and neoclassical motifs emblematic of the Directoire period. The frame is finished in a refined cream paint with warm gilt highlights and red accents, while the upholstery—**luxurious pale green and ivory striped silk**—evokes timeless sophistication. The settee’s straight lines, scroll arm supports, and finely carved floral rosettes perfectly capture the **neoclassical symmetry and understated grandeur** that define both Directoire design and the Maison Jansen aesthetic. Renowned for blending classical elegance with modern refinement, **Maison Jansen** created interiors for the world’s elite, including **Elsie de Wolfe, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Jacqueline Kennedy for the White House**. This remarkable settee embodies the grace, quality, and artistry for which **Maison Jansen** became synonymous, making it a statement piece for any collector or connoisseur of fine French furniture. Cushion may be goose down filled. Split in upholstery can be repaired by an upholsterer. Measures 55.5 wide x 38 tall x 33.25 deep x seat height of 21 tall **Keywords:** Maison Jansen settee, French Directoire furniture...

Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs
Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs

Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs

Located in London, GB

Set of four Baroque style carved giltwood and velvet throne armchairs Italian, 20th Century Height 170cm, width 93cm, depth 73cm This magnificent set of four throne armchairs was crafted in Italy during the 20th century. Their design is inspired by the Baroque style, popular in Europe in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Each armchair is adorned with an intricately carved giltwood frame, featuring pierced backs lavishly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves. The top rail of each backrest is carved with two putti perched atop grape vines, likely a nod to Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine and celebration. These figures flank a central cartouche filled with additional ornate scrollwork. At the centre of the backrests is a coat of arms surrounded by more detailed acanthus carvings. Upholstered in sumptuous maroon velvet, the seats and armrests offer both luxury and comfort. The armrests culminate in striking carved winged busts, supported by scrolling elements that further enhance the armchairs' regal presence. Each throne stands on four legs, with the front two carved into lion paws—a popular symbol of strength and majesty. The cabriole-style legs are embellished with acanthus leaves at the knees, while the stretchers and aprons are decorated with more acanthus detailing, some parts complemented by delicate floral motifs. Embodying the decorative richness of the Baroque period, this set of thrones...
