Set of 12 Italian Pine Dining Chairs, Attributed to Mario Marenco, 1970s
A rare set of twelve sculptural dining chairs in solid pine, attributed to Mario Marenco. Italian craftsmanship, 1970s. Warm patina, organic lines and beautifully rounded volumes.
This impressive set of twelve dining chairs is attributed to Mario Marenco, Italy, circa 1970s. Crafted in solid pine, the chairs display the characteristic sculptural language associated with Marenco’s organic modern designs: warm materials, soft curvature, and a sense of architectural solidity blended with a friendly, human approach to form.
Each chair features a wide, gently rounded backrest that flows into two vertical back supports, creating an instantly recognisable silhouette. The carved seat, with its subtly modelled edges, enhances comfort while maintaining a clean and minimal aesthetic. The solid pine construction shows beautiful grain patterns, natural knots and a deep, hand-applied patinated finish that has developed a rich, warm tone over the years.
The proportions are balanced and reassuringly robust, making the chairs suitable for both residential and hospitality settings—such as chalets, restaurants, wine bars or alpine-inspired interiors. Their expressive and organic character resonates with the Italian rustic-modern movement of the 1970s, as well as with the handcrafted Brutalist vocabulary seen in contemporary furniture from the same era.
Large matching sets of pine chairs from this period are increasingly difficult to source, and sets of twelve are particularly rare. Their strong visual presence allows them to pair beautifully with monolithic wood tables, stone dining tables or softer modernist interiors. With their combination of authenticity, craftsmanship and sculptural warmth, these chairs present a distinctive alternative to more commonly known mid-century design classics.
A wonderful opportunity for interior designers looking for a cohesive and highly decorative seating ensemble.
