Organic Modern Sculptural Side Table in Sustainable Ancient Matai Wood

The Emerge side table is a modern organic form made from ancient matai trees (a native timber of New Zealand) that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them.
We rescue these trees from the river and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, has been carbon dated at over 1500 years old. A sculptural shape made from individual pieces of matai wood formed together to make a patch work grain pattern.
The wood is finished with a hand rubbed, low V.O.C., natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life.

Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in England studying at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Working across Europe and Australia Tom Fereday went onto found his sole practice in 2012.

The Gallery stool. A sculptural modern organic side table/stool turned from a solid block of macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress). The wood is finished with a hand rubbed, low V.O.C., natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life.
The macrocarpa wood will continue to dry out as it finds its equilibrium moisture content of its new environment. Further movement and splits should be expected, and this is part of the wabi-sabi design of the Gallery side tables.

GolfWeave uses cord and discarded golf balls to explore atomic geometries which are hacked and distorted to make functional objects. These golf balls are arranged as if they were each atoms of carbon. Hexagonal groups of six balls each share one border to make flat surfaces, while pentagons and heptagons are placed strategically to distort and warp, giving rise to the formation of seats, legs, arms and rests.
