This antique bench from Sweden features three carved back splats for resting, with sweetly carved flowers adorning the top of each chair rail, flanked within curvy wood arm rests at each far end. The skirt is has an elegantly draped from with shell carving embellishing the center. This piece is nicely presented upon four legs, which are supported with a turned H-stretcher. Portuguese furnishings of the 18th century are bold, quirky, intensive and unlike those of any other country. They have their own national flavor. The pieces often boast elaborately turned legs and energetic carving, pierced decorations and unpredictable combinations of the other styles. in 18th century colonial Latin America by way of Portugal, the influence of which lasted from the 1690’s through to the development of neoclassicism in the 1780s. Elements of the chairs’ design can be found in the work of Thomas Chippendale, as published in the three editions of his Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director from 1754.
