On offer here is an exceptional Dutch cupboard made of the finest European summer oak in the tradition of the Dutch Renaissance during the “Dutch golden age” This cabinet is made in the Provence of Utrecht, circa 1680. The arched doors are typical for this province and this type of cabinet is also known as “Utrechtse Poortkast”. This is a totally functional two-door cupboard. It is created from hot rolled steel and found steel. The legs are made from salvaged pipe. The panels on the door fronts and sides are made from salvaged pieces of steel with the original paint and texture making this modern Industrial aesthetic a model of sustainable design. The pattern is inspired by the Quilts of Gee's Bend Alabama. Prominent colors in this piece are tones of blue, black, gray and blue, gray and rust. There are two fixed shelves inside the cabinet. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth.
