Chinese Export Furniture

CHINESE EXPORT STYLE

Expanded trade between Europe and East Asia, starting in the 16th century, led to a booming market for exported goods, particularly furniture. This was bolstered by the establishment of the Dutch and English East India Companies at the beginning of the 17th century. From folding screens and chairs to lacquer tables and silver, Chinese Export furniture was in demand and regularly copied and imitated, leading to styles like chinoiserie and Chinese Chippendale.

The expansion of exporting that had strengthened the arts during the Ming dynasty continued into the Qing dynasty era — Chinese designers made many furniture pieces specifically for export, resulting in distinctive designs that mixed traditional techniques with forms appealing to foreign buyers. For instance, cabinetmakers in Canton (modern-day Guangzhou) were prolific in crafting hardwood furniture for export in European styles that involved the expert joinery techniques of Chinese furniture. Designs for Chinese Export porcelain, cabinets, decorative objects and other furniture were often more ornately adorned than they would be for a local audience, such as with mother-of-pearl overlays or surfaces featuring lavish pictorial scenes or gold on black motifs. Some were even commissioned by wealthy European families to be adorned with their coat of arms.

Because lacquer furniture was especially prized, and the resin used to create it was difficult to import as it would harden during the long voyage, artisans in China and Japan exported numerous lacquer pieces. Long before lacquer made its way to Japan, the Chinese treated the material differently. They used it to create smooth, glossy surfaces, but also for carving, an art that began in the 12th century and is exclusively Chinese. These pieces are called cinnabar lacquer after the powdered mercury sulfide (cinnabar) employed to produce their characteristic red hue. A popular form for export was a compact cabinet with drawers, usually displayed on a small table. Undecorated furniture built in Europe was also shipped to China to be lacquered. The international exchange of design would influence furniture into the 19th century and later, informing styles such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

Antique Traditional Indonesian Gong and bonang
Antique Traditional Indonesian Gong and bonang

Antique Traditional Indonesian Gong and bonang

Located in Milano, IT

This extraordinary piece of art from Southeast Asia exudes an ancient charm that transcends time, telling stories of distant traditions and cultures. Dating back to the late 19th century, this work is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans of that era, who infused life and soul into every detail. The gong, the undisputed protagonist of this composition, is made of copper and features a dark patina that accentuates its antique and mystical character. This aged surface, which softens its original shine, adds depth and mystery, almost whispering the stories and rituals for which it was used. Supporting the gong is a solid wooden structure, painted in a lacquered red that, despite the marks of time, retains a timeless beauty. The traces of wear reveal layers of underlying color, giving the piece a lived-in and authentic charm, as if it had witnessed countless ceremonies and sacred moments. Alongside the main gong, two small gongs...

Doris Leslie Blau Chinese Vintage Floral Warm Tan Silk Rug Metal Thread
Doris Leslie Blau Chinese Vintage Floral Warm Tan Silk Rug Metal Thread

Doris Leslie Blau Chinese Vintage Floral Warm Tan Silk Rug Metal Thread

Located in New York, NY

This rare and exquisite 19th-century Chinese rug, dating from the 1880s, is a striking example of imperial-era textile artistry, crafted with opulent silk and shimmering metal threads. At once stately and refined, the rug showcases the superior craftsmanship and symbolism intrinsic to late Qing Dynasty decorative arts. At its heart lies a powerful central medallion in a rich crimson hue, composed of a stylized lotus rosette - a revered symbol of purity and spiritual enlightenment in Chinese culture. Surrounding the medallion is an elegantly scrolling field rendered in golden-yellow silk on a muted tobacco-brown ground, filled with elaborate cloud bands and celestial floral motifs. The lavish palette - featuring gold, bronze, deep rose, indigo, and turquoise - is further accentuated by the metallic threadwork, which catches light and imparts a soft, luxurious shimmer to the entire surface. This luminous quality was traditionally associated with wealth and rank in Chinese interiors. The rug's borders are defined by a series of progressively intricate guard bands. The innermost contains a row of stylized dots and fretwork, while the main border blooms with scrolling lotus and peony vines, echoing Buddhist iconography. The outermost band is a striking midnight blue, framing the piece with dramatic contrast. Woven with exceptional precision using a combination of silk and metallic thread-likely gilt-wrapped yarn-the rug reflects both artistic mastery and ceremonial significance. Its relatively compact size (approximately 8 x 5 feet) and ornate detail suggest it may have been used in a temple or palace setting, possibly as a throne rug...

Located in Chicago, IL

Resplendent with lush florals and brilliant color, this pair of porcelain vases combines stencil work with hand-painted foliage in a decorative style popular during the first two decades of the 20th century. The stenciled petals and blooms of the peonies, symbols of love and affection, create a graphic pattern of soft, modulated color, while the painted stems and small flowers punctuate the design with sharp detail. Innovative in decoration, the vases are firmly rooted in China’s time-honored ceramic tradition with their Classic fantail contours and butterfly handles.
