A truly stunning antique Art Deco birds-eye maple dining suite attributed to the world renowned cabinet makers, Harry & Lou Epstein, comprising a dining table and the original matching set of six cloud back dining chairs, circa 1920 in date. The rectangular shaped dining table has a stunning birds-eye maple figured top with rounded corners and stands on a decorative twin pedestal base. The original and matching set of six chairs are the highly desirable cloud back model and comprises six side chairs, all with curved backs that show the figured grain of the birds-eye maple beautifully, and they are all upholstered in cream leather. This set is a fabulous example of the Art Deco period and will enhance any room in which it is placed. Dimensions in cm: Height 77 x Width 180 x Depth 92 - Table Height 84 x Width 50 x Depth 58 - Chairs Dimensions in inches: Height 2 foot, 6 inches x Width 5 foot, 11 inches x Depth 3 foot - Table Height 2 foot, 9 inches x Width 1 foot, 8 inches x Depth 1 foot, 11 inches - Chairs Birdseye Maple occurs primarily in Sugar Maple and is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the Birdseyes. In the days when all furniture was made essentially by hand, Birdseye Maple was used by only the most capable cabinetmakers. These artisans had developed the tools and skills to work and finish Birdseye Maple successfully. Antique furniture made out of Birdseye Maple is rare and beautiful. The divergent grain that makes Birdseye Maple beautiful also makes it difficult to work. Early woodworking machines ran at low rpms and had only 2 knives per cutterhead. This often produced Birdseye surfaces that were chipped and torn. It took many hours of hand planing and scraping to get these surfaces to a high sheen. This limited the use of Birdseye maple to projects whose value could justify the extra labour cost. Examples of this are fine furniture and musical instruments. Epstein furniture was originally founded in East London by Polish immigrants in the 1890s. The firm passed to brothers Harry and Lou Epstein and the pair turned their attention to the production of Art Deco forms from the 1930s until the 1950s.
