An unusual George IV specimen marble backgammon table attributed to Gillows

By Gillows of Lancaster & London

Located in Lymington, Hampshire

An unusual George IV specimen marble backgammon table attributed to Gillows. This rectangular table is strongly attributed to Gillows. It has a rectangular top inlaid with a central chess board flanked by two backgammon fields, all inlaid with a multitude of specimen marbles. One edge carved and gilded with the Latin motto ‘Turpe est in patria vivere et patriam ignorare’. The oak base has a drawer for cards and playing pieces, all raised on a square section support with four splayed legs and the original brass castors. English, circa 1830. Provenance: Geoffrey Bennison Ltd, London, November 1983 The Mermaid House Collection, St. John’s Wood, London Property of a gentleman Private American collection The form of the base of this table is related to several known Gillows commissions from the late Regency period and the quality of the cabinet work also suggests that firm attribution to the firm. Backgammon tables, rather than more general games tables, are unusual at this date and the use of inlaid specimen marbles in the top suggests a client of wealth. Additionally, the Latin text on the edge of the table provides further clues. The text, Turpe est in patria vivere et patriam ignorare, translates as “it is shameful to live in your homeland and not know it”. This phrase dates back to antiquity but rose to prominence once again in the mid-18th century when used by the botanist and key Enlightenment figure Carl Linnaeus in his work on the native flora of Sweden. The combination of this phrase and the use of native English timbers and marbles is promoting English raw materials and craftsmanship at a time when the noble and the wealthy were focussed on European pietra dura tables. Mermaid House in St John’s Wood was re-designed by Chester Jones...

Edwardian Satinwood Hand-Painted Metamorphic Game Table
Edwardian Satinwood Hand-Painted Metamorphic Game Table

Edwardian Satinwood Hand-Painted Metamorphic Game Table

By Sheraton Revival

Located in Chicago, IL

This magnificent Circa 1910 Edwardian Satinwood hand-painted game table displays signs of fine craftsmanship and ingenuity. From the 17th to the 19th Century, card and board games were means to socialize and gamble large sums of money among the wealthy. Game tables are an example of specialized furniture beautifully crafted by a skilled cabinetmaker for such clients. When not in use, the envelope top has such an elegant hand-painted floral design and fine maple inlay that makes it too lovely to conceal by placing anything on top. Closed, it can decorate any hallway or entryway. On casters, the table can be easily moved from room to room, which makes it very versatile. The maple inlay detail continues the sides and drawers, showing no detail of elegance was spared. Once you swivel the top, it opens to a flat green felt surface for playing cards. It has a rosewood and satinwood parquetry chessboard and cribbage board that pulls out in the front with brass knobs. The interior is a mahogany drawer with compartments for the storage of play pieces. The chess pieces are ivory. The right side opens to a hidden compartment with a built-in tantalus accompanied by three fine crystal decanters, perfect for pouring a drink before a game. The left side is a dummy drawer to symmetrically continue the aesthetics of the design to its entirety. As a commissioned piece of work, this museum-quality piece is perfect for any collector or connoisseur of rare, one-of-a-kind antiques. Comes with three crystal decanters and game pieces shown are included: a complete ivory chess set...

Experimentation with plastics has often formed a key part of his activity. He already showed a strong curiosity for the subject choosing it for his thesis at ENSAD in Paris. Citizen of the world (he has lived and worked for many years in Europe, North America and Asia), he is a consultant for companies in the fields of home furnishings, large and small household appliances, lighting, technically advanced products, and sports. At the beginning of the seventies, he perfect the first ski-boot in thermo plastic material completely recyclable, subsequently commercialized by the Italian firm Caber (later known as Lotto). He quickly gains the responsibility of the entire collections and starts a long and fruitful collaboration which led to the patenting of the ski-boot with a symmetric shell, which was for many years the most widely-sold ski-boot in the world. This is the origin of his specialization as a sports designer, which led him to close collaboration with the most important multinational sport companies in the United States, Asia and Europe, both in the sport shoes and in other sport fields: ski, tennis raquets, golf clubs, etc. Working in this sector, which has often pioneered research into new materials and techniques, provided the experience to enable him to bring innovation to more traditional areas where is set a concept of design as pure aesthetic shape.
