Located in Langweer, NL

Title: 1799 Samuel Howitt "Mares & Foals" Engraving – Original Georgian English Equestrian Print Creator: Samuel Howitt (British, 1756–1822) Date: Published February 1, 1799 Medium: Original copperplate engraving on laid paper, unframed Country of Origin: England An original late Georgian copperplate engraving titled Mares & Foals, designed and engraved by the distinguished British sporting artist Samuel Howitt. The print depicts a tranquil pastoral scene with mares and their young gathered beneath a magnificent tree in an English countryside setting. The plate is signed in the image "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that Howitt both conceived and executed the engraving himself. At lower right it bears the publication line "Published Feb.y 1st, 1799," confirming its eighteenth-century origin. Samuel Howitt was among the foremost British animal and sporting artists of his generation. Renowned for his naturalistic depictions of horses, hunting scenes, and wildlife, his works were widely admired by the English gentry and remain highly collectible today. His engravings combine elegant composition with remarkable observational detail, making them timeless decorative works. This authentic Georgian print offers exceptional appeal for equestrian interiors, country houses, libraries, and collectors of antique sporting art. Antique Map Turkey in Asia, Ottoman Empire Anatolia Syria Iraq Black, 1884

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Map Turkey in Asia, Ottoman Empire Anatolia Syria Iraq Black 1884 This detailed and beautifully engraved antique map titled Turkey in Asia was published in the New and Revised Edition of Black’s General Atlas of the World, issued in Edinburgh in 1884 by the respected Scottish cartographic publisher Adam and Charles Black. The map illustrates a vast portion of the Middle East during the late nineteenth century, when the region formed the Asian territories of the Ottoman Empire. The map centers on Anatolia, the great peninsula that today forms modern Turkey, shown here as the heartland of Ottoman Asia. The rugged mountain ranges, river systems, and historic provinces are carefully engraved, reflecting the high standard of Victorian atlas cartography. Numerous cities and towns are clearly marked, including Constantinople (Istanbul), Smyrna (Izmir), Angora (Ankara), Trebizond, and many other regional centers that played important roles in trade and administration. Extending southward, the map covers Syria and the Levant, including Damascus, Aleppo, and the Mediterranean coastal cities that historically linked the Ottoman interior with European commerce. Further south appear Palestine and the Sinai region, together with the eastern Mediterranean coastline. The map also includes the northern portion of Egypt, showing the Nile Delta and the strategic area surrounding the Suez Canal, which had opened only fifteen years earlier in 1869 and had quickly become one of the most important maritime routes in the world. To the east the map extends into Mesopotamia, depicting the great river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates, including the historic cities of Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. These regions formed key administrative provinces of the Ottoman Empire and were vital corridors connecting Anatolia with Persia and the Arabian Peninsula. The composition also includes parts of Armenia, Kurdistan, and the Caucasus along the northern and northeastern margins, as well as portions of Persia and Arabia to the southeast. An inset map of Cyprus appears at the bottom, highlighting the island’s strategic importance in the eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus had recently come under British administration in 1878, reflecting the shifting geopolitical dynamics of the region during the late nineteenth century. The map is engraved with remarkable clarity, featuring finely drawn coastlines, mountain relief, and a delicate latitude and longitude grid. Land areas are distinguished with subtle printed color, a typical feature of high-quality Victorian atlas production. The understated color scheme and precise engraving give the map both historical authority and strong decorative appeal. Maps from Black’s General Atlas were widely respected for their accuracy and clarity and were used throughout the British world in schools, libraries, and government institutions. Today they are highly appreciated by collectors for their elegant engraving and for the insight they provide into the political geography of the late nineteenth century. This map was published in the New and Revised Edition of Black’s General Atlas of the World, Edinburgh, 1884. This example is an original antique steel engraving with original printed color applied at the time of publication. It is not a modern reproduction. Any presentation images showing the print framed are for visual inspiration only. The map is supplied unframed. Condition: Good antique condition with light age toning consistent with age and a central fold from the original atlas binding. A small tear near the folding split. The engraving remains crisp and the printed color remains clear and attractive. Framing tips: This map displays beautifully in a wide horizontal frame. A dark walnut or classic black frame combined with an ivory or museum-white mat will emphasize the delicate engraving and warm tones of the nineteenth-century printed color. Technique: Steel engraving with original printed color Maker: Adam & Charles Black, Edinburgh, 1884 Keyword block: Turkey in Asia, Ottoman Empire, Anatolia, Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Iraq, Baghdad, Mosul, Basra, Damascus, Aleppo, Constantinople, Istanbul, Smyrna, Izmir, Angora, Ankara, Armenia, Kurdistan, Caucasus, Persia, Iran, Arabia, Nile Delta, Egypt, Suez Canal, Cyprus, Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East map, Ottoman provinces, nineteenth century Middle East, Victorian atlas map, Black’s General Atlas, antique Turkey map...

Original Antique Print of Four Corals by Bertuch, c. 1790 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting four remarkable varieties of coral and marine growth, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around the end of the 18th century. The plate is titled “Corallen I / Corallia / Coraux I” and bears the reference “I.B.21” at lower right. It belongs to Bertuch’s early natural-history series illustrating the extraordinary diversity of marine organisms then collectively described as corals. Four dramatically different specimens are arranged across the sheet. Fig. 1 depicts a branching red coral with multiple upright stems. Its vivid original red coloring makes it the strongest color accent in the composition and recalls the precious red corals that had long been collected in the Mediterranean and used for jewelry and decorative objects. Fig. 2 shows a tall, dark branching form with an elegant tree-like structure, representative of the flexible horn-like corals historically grouped among the gorgonians. Fig. 3 illustrates a large irregular, porous coral formation, rendered in pale ochre and gray tones. Its complex surface and numerous cavities emphasize the extraordinary structural variety encountered in coral colonies. Fig. 4 dominates the upper part of the plate and is perhaps the most visually striking specimen. Its broad, deeply folded and radiating surfaces create an almost flower-like or sculptural appearance, demonstrating why corals occupied such a fascinating position between the botanical and zoological worlds in early natural-history classification. During the 18th century, the classification and biological nature of corals remained an important subject of scientific investigation. Earlier naturalists had frequently compared them with plants or mineral formations, while increasingly detailed observation established their animal nature. The terminology and organization of early coral collections therefore provide a fascinating insight into the development of marine zoology. The engraving combines finely engraved scientific detail with restrained original hand coloring in red, ochre, gray and black. Its large sculptural forms and spacious composition give the plate considerable decorative appeal in both traditional natural-history collections and contemporary coastal interiors. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, covering zoology, botany, geography, science, technology, antiquity and numerous other subjects. Title: Plan of the Château de Saint-Cloud First Floor by Baltard, Paris, 1803 Description: This finely executed original antique copperplate engraving presents a detailed architectural floor plan of the first floor of the Château de Saint-Cloud, one of France's most celebrated royal residences. The plan meticulously illustrates the palace's internal layout, grand courtyards, formal gardens, fountains, terraces, and surrounding landscape, offering a fascinating insight into the organization of the royal estate during the Napoleonic period. The Château de Saint-Cloud was a favored residence of the French monarchy and later of Napoleon Bonaparte. Overlooking the River Seine, it was renowned for its magnificent architecture and formal gardens, making it one of the grandest royal palaces in France before its destruction during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The engraving was created by the distinguished French architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846) and published in Paris in 1803 as part of the celebrated Napoleonic-era publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés. This monumental work documented France's most important monuments with exceptional architectural precision and artistic refinement. Both historically important and visually appealing, this engraving is an excellent acquisition for collectors of antique architectural plans...

Original Antique Print of Two Sperm Whales by Bertuch, c. 1800 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting two sperm whales, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around the beginning of the 19th century. The plate is titled “Fische XXXVIII / Poissons XXXVIII” and presents two different representations of the sperm whale, one of the largest toothed whales in the world. Both animals are shown in profile with their characteristic massive, almost rectangular heads, narrow toothed lower jaws and relatively small flippers. Jets of water emerge dramatically from the blowholes. The unusual appearance of the animals reflects both their distinctive anatomy and the way whales were understood and represented by European naturalists around 1800. The sperm whale was of considerable economic importance during this period. It was hunted particularly for spermaceti, the waxy substance contained within its enormous head, as well as for whale oil and ambergris. These early zoological representations are especially interesting because accurate observation of living whales was extremely difficult. Natural-history illustrators therefore frequently relied upon stranded or captured specimens, descriptions by sailors and whalers, and earlier published illustrations. The engraving is delicately enhanced with original hand coloring in restrained shades of black, gray and brown and bears the inscription “Jacob Hauer Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
