The painting's theme is connected to the traditional Chuvash spring festival of Akatuy. Today is a special day for the young Chuvash girl Asya: she will be participating for the first time in an ancient festive rite—a girls' round dance. She is dressed in a festive chalkha costume made of white fabric, adorned with scarlet and dark blue embroidery. The geometric patterns harken back to ancient symbols of fertility, the sun, water, and feminine power. On her chest is a bib covered with coins and metal plates that ring like small bells when moved.
