Caliber 13.33 Mens Single Button World War I Military Chronograph Watch - Sterling Silver World's First Chronograph Wristwatch - A True Legend - Original - 1 Year Warranty Today's showcases this very collectable and rare caliber 13.33 late World War I era chronograph. First developed in 1913, like many chronograph pocket watches, the 13.33 relies on a single pusher to start, start and reset the chronograph. Invoiced by Longines on October 19th, 1918 to the A. Wittnauer Company, it was retailed through Tiffany & Co. significantly adding to its desirability. While some of the dials for these watches contained colorful scales, the so-called "military style" dial on this very early example is much more utilitarian and uncluttered and goes along well with the watch's trench style design. It's easy to read large numerals and luminous cathedral hands gave it a natural suitability for military uses, particularly important at the time this watch was produced. It is in pleasing original condition down to the all of the register hands and has matching serial and case numbers. The dual signed sterling silver case - signed with the traditional Longines signature and also stamped Tiffany & Co., is in honest condition Its clean dial is in excellent condition with one discretely touched up small spot by 11. Two of our Master Watchmakers worked for the last year and half years restoring the movement of this special watch to breathe new life into the chronograph which works well (restoration value $2195). Photos of the beautifully finished movement available upon request (you should ask for one!) It is keeping very accurate time. For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new Hirsch leather strap designed for fixed lugs use and a vintage Longines buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment. Also accompanying it are inner and outer vintage Longines boxes. If you're familiar with modern Longines, the Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph 180th Anniversary Limited Edition was specially designed to mark the brand’s 180th anniversary's and is closely based on the original 13.33 watches. In my opinion the 13.33 is not yet fully appreciated and still a bit under priced, and I would not be surprised to see it continue to increase in value closer to that of the 13ZN. One used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealership and was given training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center. Longines 13.33 chronograph: During Longines' golden era from the 1910's to the 1940's, while the idea of flight grew from the margins into a practical and valuable endeavor, the company's wristwatches earned a reputation as the constant cockpit companions of pioneering aviators. One of the significant characteristics of the chronograph models of these watches were that they featured an "in house" Longines movement fully designed and built by Longines. Very few of even the top chronograph watches use "in-house" produced caliber; iconic movements that power distinguished watches like the Rolex Daytona, Gallet Multichron 12, or even the exceedingly rare Patek Philippe 1518...

A rare and highly evocative First World War (WWI) period wristwatch by Rolex, housed in a 925 Sterling Silver Officer’s Case attributed to the renowned London case importer George Stockwell of Stockwell & Co - agents arranging for Swiss made cases to be hallmarked in British assay offices. The timepiece is extremely rare (especially in such fine original condition) & proud to have ALL original parts (case, dial, movement, winder, lugs) ~~~ The hinged 34mm CASE is performed in Sterling Silver, bearing clear English hallmarks, including the GS sponsor's mark, alongside import marks, 925 stamp and the R.W.C. The Waltham Watch Company was an American watch manufacturing house founded in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It was the first American company to mass-produce watches using interchangeable parts. The company's watches were known for their quality and affordability, and they quickly became popular with consumers. Waltham played a major role in the development of the American watch industry as well as establishing the concept of “mass produced” products. By the way, Henry Ford was a watchmaker, and he was inspired to build cars the same way Waltham Watches were produced, for the masses with interchangeable parts. Waltham’s success helped to make the United States a major player in the global watch market as well as promote the idea of “industrialization.” Before the Waltham Watch Company, watches were generally produced by hand, in “cottage” industries. They were owned by the wealthier class or the “working class” that needed to know the time. The company's affordable watches made them accessible to a wider range of people and helped to change the way people thought about time. Prior to this, people used their local Church bells to direct them in their daily lives. The Company continued to grow and prosper throughout the 19th century. During the American Civil War, they supplied watches to the military, and of course they grew because of this association. In 1885, they moved their headquarters to Waltham, Massachusetts, and changed their name to the American Waltham Watch Company. Waltham was a major exhibitor at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The company's exhibit at the exposition was housed in a large pavilion that was designed to resemble a factory. The pavilion was filled with watches of all shapes and sizes, as well as machinery used in the manufacturing process. The exhibit was a major success, and it helped to raise the profile of Waltham watches around the world. Amongst the visitors at the exhibition was a contingent from Switzerland. When they realized what Waltham was doing, they quickly understood that their methods were outdated and soon enough they would be a country unable to compete. They also went to the Waltham factory for a visit after the exhibition. It is said that they purchased a few of Waltham’s higher grade movements. The director of factory said he would have them “adjusted” before they left, but they said, it was not necessary. When they arrived back in Switzerland, they checked them and were shocked at the level of quality and accuracy. This prompted them to buy some of the equipment that Waltham was using so they could start building better watches that were less expensive and more accurate. Some of that machinery ended up in the small town of Schaffhausen and became The International Watch Company. They are still in business today making exceptional watches. The military, for any nation, is a powerful source of revenue for industrial contracts. So, any industry would prosper during war and Waltham continued to be a supplier to the military for over 100 years. Through WW 1...
