Victorian FJ Emery Brown Transferware Sussex Pattern Pitcher and 16" Basin
Victorian FJ Emery Brown Transferware Sussex Pattern Pitcher and 16" Basin

Victorian FJ Emery Brown Transferware Sussex Pattern Pitcher and 16" Basin

By Emery

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This Aesthetic Movement brown transferware Sussex pattern earthenware pitcher and basin set was made by FJ Emery of Burslem, England, in operation from 1878 to 1894. The pitcher and basin feature large cartouches bearing swallows in flight over moonlit waves. The decoration includes flower-filled cartouches and wide bands with trailing flowers above and below, along with Japanese-influenced Aesthetic motifs. The exterior of the basin has three large floral and foliate groupings, variations of which also appear beneath the lip of the pitcher. The pitcher sports an ornate scrolled handle ornamented with a coordinating band of foliate decor. The basin measures just over 16" across the rim and stands 5" tall. It is 7.75" across the foot rim. The glazed foot bears a backstamp reading "SUSSEX EMERY BURSLEM" indicating the Sussex pattern made by Emery in Burslem, the "Mother Town" of Stoke-on-Trent. It is a substantial piece and weighs 5lbs 12.5oz. The basin is in good condition with signs of use and wear expected in an antique item, including areas of fine age-related crazing with associated discoloration under the glaze and small chips to the underside of the foot rim. Production-related anomalies are present including three stilt marks from the kiln located inside and underneath the basin, an area of glaze pooling with crazing near the foot rim, glaze pops and flecks of material caught in the glaze, a few tight firing cracks that do not carry through the body, and anomalies in the transfer decoration. The pitcher stands 12.75" tall and is 7" across the widest part of the body. It measures 8.75" from the front of the lip to the back of the handle and is 4.5" across the neck as measured at the rim. The foot rim is 4.75" in diameter and bears the same backstamp found on the basin with the addition of the number 1 and the impressed number 22. The piece weighs 4 lbs. The pitcher is in very good condition with signs of use and wear expected in an antique item including a minor chip and shelf wear to the underside of the foot. Common production-related anomalies are present including glaze pops, pooling, and irregularities in the transfer decoration noted for accuracy. This charming Emery Sussex pattern swallow and flower basin and pitcher set displays beautifully and would make a wonderful addition to an existing brown Aesthetic Movement transferware collection or a larger grouping of antique transferware...

19th Century Minton’s Art Pottery Studio Kensington Gore Hand-Painted Charger

By Minton

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. The scene includes multiple colors and textures and features a cherubic toddler seated upon a bed alongside a young girl standing on a blue footstool...

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Double-Handled Compote with Mask Head Detail
Rubboli Lustre Majolica Double-Handled Compote with Mask Head Detail

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Double-Handled Compote with Mask Head Detail

By Rubboli

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This early 20th century piece of Italian lustreware was made by the renowned Rubboli family pottery in the Umbrian town of Gualdo Tadino, Italy. Italian lustreware Majolica production traces its origins to the Renaissance. The art was revived in Gualdo Tadino during the last quarter of the 19th century, largely due to the efforts of ceramist Paolo Rubboli. Rubboli established his pottery in the region around 1870, and became known for the high quality of his distinctive cobalt, red and gold Neo-Renaissance lustreware. Rubboli's wife Daria and sons Lorenzo and Alberto continued Paolo's efforts after his death in 1890, and joined the newly formed consortium Societa Ceramica Umbria in 1920. Rubboli pieces dating to the period are marked with a blue underglaze "SCU" in a triangle mark along with a conjoined "PR" monogram in homage to Paolo's work. This large ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli double handled compote is finished in cobalt, red and gold lustre. The piece consists of a round bowl at the top with elongated applied handles at either side, all of which rest upon a pedestal base. The bowl features two bas-relief winged mask heads on the exterior which have been depicted with open mouths sprouting handles in the form of serpent-like forked tongues. The exterior is also painted with pairs of imposing gryphons, each of which flank a large urn. The interior of the bowl is also heavily decorated and bears a fantastical winged lion set at the center of a series of scrolling acanthus leaves and urns, best seen in image 8. The remainder of the piece is finished with foliate and geometric motifs. It is of note that a similar piece was included in the traveling exhibit of important Majolica and lusterware entitled 'The Rubboli Collection - Italian lustre pottery in Gualdo Tadino' held in the Chiesa Monumentale di San Francesco between July 17 – October 3, 2010. The compote is in excellent original condition with no restorations or repairs. There are some glaze skips present on the piece as well as minor chips at the base of the pedestal foot which do not detract from the appearance of the compote and are mentioned for accuracy. The underside of the piece bears the blue underglaze Rubboli family Società Ceramica Umbra mark cited above consisting of the letters “SCU” within a triangle along with the entwined Paolo Rubboli 'PR' monogram, which was used from 1920 to 1931. The 3lb 5oz compote stands...

Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration

By Gorham, Rookwood Pottery Co.

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...
