Large Ornate Sterling Silver Rectangular Butler Serving Tray Renaissance Revival

About the Item

This elegant sterling silver rectangular double-handled butlers tray features engraved Neo-Renaissance decoration including winged cherubs along with urns and floral and foliate motifs. There is a large oval cartouche at the center which has not been monogrammed. The four corners bear matching scrolling foliate motifs, all of which are located within a narrow rectangular border made up of two rows of small and closely spaced etched dots. The thick applied rim is quite ornate with decoration including winged cherubs flanked by cornucopia and foliate scrolls separated by raised ovals, all of which are set on a stippled ground. The corners are finished with curved strap-form bands carrying large polished ovals at the center. The applied bands terminate in c-scrolls and shells with additional shells at the outside edges. The tray is finished with two large figural handles made in the form of dolphins with scaled bodies. The tray is in very good condition with no removals or repairs. As an antique, the piece shows signs of age consisting of scratching and traces of tarnish which do not detract from its appearance and are mentioned for accuracy. The piece is 21" across as measured from the outside points of the handles and 17.75" by 13.75" as measured from the edges of the tray itself. The handles stand 2.375" as measured from the tabletop to their highest points. The handles are 4" across at their widest and have plenty of clearance, making them easy to grasp. The back is marked "STERLING". The tray weighs approximately 1700 grams. This gorgeous antique sterling silver tray would be a fantastic addition to a collection of fine silver serving pieces. An unusual antique find ideal for display or use at the table.

  • Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Tazza Compote 263B, Grape Motif
    By Georg Jensen
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
Vintage Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza compote with grape motif. This fabulous Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza features Jensen's iconic grape motif, a celebrated range of pieces which were inspired by the Art Nouveau aesthetic coupled with time the artist spent traveling in Italy. Georg Jensen was born in 1866 and trained as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1892. Jensen began his artistic career in ceramics and started working with silver in 1904. He went on to establish his own smithy in Copenhagen and like many others working during the Art Nouveau period, was strongly influenced by natural forms and structure found in flowers and plants. As mentioned above, Jensen spent time in Italy shortly after the turn of the century and developed an appreciation for ancient Roman silver work. He was also struck by the work of more recent Italian artists and was particularly influenced by those pieces which drew upon classical mythology, such as Baroque painter Caravaggio's 'Bacchus'. Jensen combined these influences with emerging Art Nouveau organic motifs, leading him to utilize the malleable qualities of silver to create his renowned Grape Collection. This form of this silver tazza was initially designed by Jensen in 1918. The piece has a round pedestal foot which rises to a thick columnar stem reminiscent of the twisting trunk...
