Hand-carved, circa 1720, using chestnut and oak woods, this desk was recently part of Le Grand Monarque hotel in Chartres, France. The desk has been stripped at some point, allowing the beautiful wood grain and round dowel construction to become focal points. The stunning desk has a shaped top with quarter round molding. A 23 ½” W seat opening is topped by a concave front drawer with a bronze drop handle affixed by a pair of rosette mounts. Similar handles can be seen on each of the four main drawers, which are surrounded by thick cavetto molding. These drawers also have a scalloped keyplate and mounts of two putti hunting dragons hidden amongst foliage. Exceptional three-piece vanity ensemble comprising a dressing table, monumental round mirror and matching stool, crafted by the Holland Furniture Company in the 1940s. The set is executed in beautifully figured ribbon Avodire, an exotic African hardwood prized for its luminous golden color and dramatic striped grain. The restrained architectural form is particularly striking, combining the refined materials and craftsmanship associated with late Art Deco with the clean, unornamented geometry that would define postwar American modernism. Subtle details—including integrated drawers, finely constructed interiors and the slender circular frame of the oversized mirror—allow the exceptional Avodire veneer to remain the focus. Holland, Michigan and nearby Grand Rapids were at the center of American furniture production during this period. The region attracted many of the country's leading manufacturers and designers, including Baker and Widdicomb, both of which produced important designs by Donald Deskey during this era. This suite reflects the same sophisticated transition from 1930s Art Deco toward the emerging vocabulary of American modern design.
