This impressive mantel clock with an eight day single fusee movement evokes the concept of time well spent in learning. It is crowned by Jupiter's eagle who bears sacred oak garlands above the dial, whose Ionic capital cradle is framed by addorsed studying nymphs. They are seated on a bronze plinth which is centred by an Arcadian Pan mask amongst golden flowered ormolu garlands, the whole resting on turned baluster feet. The dial is cast in ormolu and unusually has Arabic numerals, surround by a anthemion frieze bezel. With the eagle a symbol of Jupiter and hence the divinity of learning, and the mask of Pan a reference to the natural world. This clock is, therefore, a celebration Natural Philosophy, the study of science and the natural world, and a display of classical learning and understanding. The two seated figures derive from the model of L'Etude, which together with La Philosophie, was created for the Sèvres factory by Louis-Simon Boizot in 1780. Under the instructions of the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre, these figures were incorporated into a clock design, from which the present clock derives, by the cisleur-doreur François Rémond. In 1788 Daguerre delivered two clocks after his new design to Louis XVI for the Château de St. Cloud. The model obviously appealed to the Prince of Wales, later George IV, as he purchased two clocks of this model from Daguerre, one of which was in his bedroom, the other in his dressing-room one is now in Windsor Castle the other in Buckingham Palace. This clock was probably made by Baetens & Co who specialised in bronze and ormolu decorative objects in the Regency period. No doubt identifying the fashionable subject matter and style after the Prince Regent popularised it at Carlton House. They made models in bronze ormolu and marble for many clock makers of the period. A near identical version of this clock was in the collection of the Marquess of Bath at Longleat House until its sale at Christies in 2002, made by Santiago James Moore French of the Royal Exchange. An exceptionally elaborate French three-piece mantel clock garniture dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870, comprising a monumental mantel clock and its original pair of five-light candelabra. Richly conceived in the historicist taste of the Napoleon III period, the ensemble is distinguished by an extraordinary density of sculptural and architectural ornament. The clock is constructed as an elaborate architectural composition, its circular white enamel dial framed by a finely ornamented gilt surround and flanked by tall, fluted classical columns. Particularly striking is the large central decorative panel beneath the dial. It is modelled in high relief with a classical female mask emerging from an elaborate symmetrical arrangement of scrolling acanthus foliage, flowers and arabesques. The ornament continues throughout the case, with floral garlands, foliate scrolls, palmettes, beading, moulded borders and richly worked architectural details creating an exceptionally opulent surface. The upper section is crowned by a substantial classical urn with a domed cover and finial. Its fluted and lobed body is surrounded by sweeping foliate handles terminating in flame-like elements, giving the clock a particularly imposing vertical silhouette. On either side of the clock, scrolling architectural extensions are surmounted by smaller ornamental urns and richly modelled foliage. The lower section incorporates further floral panels, classical motifs and boldly scrolling feet, producing an unusually complex and balanced composition when viewed from the front. The white enamel dial displays blue Roman numerals for the hours and an outer Arabic minute track, complemented by an elaborate pair of pierced gilt hands. Two winding apertures indicate the time-and-strike movement. The movement bears the Japy Frères mark, one of the most important names associated with French clockmaking of the 19th century. The accompanying candelabra were conceived as an integral part of the garniture and repeat the ornamental vocabulary of the clock. Each rises from an architectural base richly decorated with floral reliefs, scrollwork and foliate feet. Above is a large classical urn-form body with fluting and applied ornament, from which emerge five candle branches. The branches form an elegant symmetrical arrangement of tightly coiled volutes and acanthus foliage. The central candleholder is elevated above the four surrounding lights, creating the characteristic tiered silhouette of an important French mantel garniture. The candle cups themselves are finely modelled with fluted classical decoration. The ensemble retains its gilt surface, whose warm tone beautifully emphasizes the remarkable depth and variety of the cast decoration. The clock is accompanied by its shaped wooden display base, finished to complement the architecture of the case. The original pendulum and two keys are also present. With the clock measuring approximately 47 cm (18.5 in.) high on its base and each candelabrum approximately 46 cm (18.1 in.) high, the complete garniture has considerable presence. The substantial weight — approximately 8 kg for the clock alone and approximately 3.5 kg for each candelabrum — further reflects the substantial construction of the ensemble. A highly decorative and imposing example of French 19th-century horological and decorative arts, conceived as a unified mantelpiece composition and particularly impressive for its elaborate sculptural ornament, substantial proportions and survival as a complete three-piece ensemble. Dimensions: Clock without wooden base: 38 cm wide × 43 cm high / 15.0 × 16.9 in. Clock with wooden base: 42 cm wide × 47 cm high / 16.5 × 18.5 in. Each candelabrum: 17 cm wide × 46 cm high / 6.7 × 18.1 in. Approximate weight of clock without base: 8 kg / 17.6 lb Approximate weight of each candelabrum: 3.5 kg / 7.7 lb Condition: The garniture is preserved in very good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with its 19th-century date. The gilt surfaces remain remarkably well preserved overall, retaining a rich and visually impressive appearance. The enamel dial shows a small area of historic restoration around the Roman numeral IV, where part of the numeral and the adjacent enamel have been carefully restored. Minor surface traces consistent with age are also visible. The original convex front glass is no longer present. The rear glazed door and its glass remain in place. The clock has been wound and tested through one complete winding cycle and operated correctly during testing, including the striking mechanism. As with any antique mechanical clock...

Rare and great folk-art workmanship mantel clock for the collectors and enthousiasts. Over the years we have had the pleasure of owning and selling a number of beautiful Black Forest antiques, but never did we come accross a 19th century Black Forest, Folk Art table clock of this design and subject matter and with such amazing natural organic details. This small church or chapel-like 'clockhouse' is entirely handcrafted out of all kinds of wood, but the most eye-catching is ofcourse the organic root wood. Each piece is like an abstract sculpture and depending on how you see things, they may look like one thing to you, but like something completely different to the next person. Because of all the natural materials that were used this small church has a stunning organic look and feel, but what really takes it to another level is the bell striking mechanism. Every six hours the church bell will ring many times, the door on the left will open at every 'strike', revealing the original monk sculpture inside (as shown in the attached video in this listing). With the hand carved crucifix on the right side being made of the same color and materials, it totally blends in with the entire organic design of this Christian antique. Over the many decades this good size and rare antique clock has also grown the most amazing patina and with the natural beauty and unique artisanship that it radiates people will want to stop and study its uniqueness. This work-of-art-table-clock comes with a single day clock mechanism, protected from dust by the original 'back door'. It runs and strikes perfectly and comes with an antique key for winding it. Apart from a few minor imperfections, this rare antique is in excellent condition, which makes it perfect for lovers of unique and rare clocks in general and for Black Forest and Christian Folk Art collectors in particular.
