Lesley Schiff (born 1951) is an American fine artist. Schiff studied painting at the Art Institute Chicago before developing her signature practice using color laser printers to create images. Her work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Mead Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other major museums, corporate and private collections globally. Lesley Schiff revolutionized the photocopier from being an office tool to just another instrument in the artist's arsenal. Rather than addressing the tool in her work, Schiff instead uses the photocopier like a paintbrush to realize her vision. Once a painter, Schiff says: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. Direct." Painting with light, Schiff's body of work outlines a cycle of life: man, woman, child, civilization, nature, technology. More recent works challenge the viewer to understand the concept of eye-levels and perspectives, reinventing the way we see. Schiff's work was the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first digital acquisition, and most recently, was featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art in "Experiments in Electrostatics". She uses a color laser printer “like a paintbrush” to create her art. She has said about her work and her tool: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. The Whitney Museum will show Lesley Schiff's pioneering SEASONS portfolio in its entirety. Many prominent collections acquired SEASONS as their first digital artwork. She participated in the Punk Art show in the 1970's. Her work kind of relates to Fluxus and Dada. Leslie Schiff moved from Chicago to New York in the early 1970s. Much of her art involves collage and the Xerox photocopy machine. Her images are rooted in her personal psyche and have an intuitive meaning that is not always easily understood. In exhibitions, Xerox sheets are combined and displayed decoratively on the wall. Schiff has also created books; and made video and sound tapes. She was included in the seminal New York/New Wave 1981 exhibition show at MoMA PS1 along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, William S.Burroughs, David Byrne, Larry Clark, Crash (John Matos), Ronnie Cutrone, Brian Eno, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, Ray Johnson, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Scharf, Steven Sprouse, Andy Warhol and Lawrence Weiner. He lives and works in New York City. Born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Miami, Florida, Arsham was 12 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed his childhood home. This traumatic event has been a continuous theme through his work. Arsham attended the Design and Architecture High School and was awarded a full scholarship to The Cooper Union in New York City. After graduating from school, Arsham moved back to Miami and started an exhibition space called "The House" with several artist friends It was through The House that Arsham met Emmanuel Perrotin in 2004. By 2005, Galerie Perrotin in Paris was representing Arsham. Arsham was part of a circle of Miami artists around Carlos Betancourt that included Craig Coleman, Carlos Alves and Kenny Scharf as well as younger artists like Martin Oppel, Bhakti Baxter and Daniel Arsham.Arsham was invited to create stage design and tour with choreographer Merce Cunningham's Dance Company leading to ongoing stage design practice and a sustained collaboration with choreographer and former Cunningham dancer, Jonah Bokaer. Arsham founded Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen in 2007. The architecture collaboration has included work with fashion brands, interior and architectural design, and a complete line of functional design objects. Daniel Arsham is mostly known for his objects cast in volcanic ash - as if they were found on some future archeological site. They are called "Future Relics". Daniel Arsham’s "Future Relics" series is one of the most enigmatic and compelling ongoing art projects. Arsham’s artistic oeuvre primarily consists of taking objects that we do not use anymore — old clocks, phones, cameras or music cassettes — and recasts them as archaeological artifacts, as if they were excavated by scientists in some distant, dystopian future. The packaging of the relics is done in a very particular way. The design of the packaging looks almost like something you would find in a museum setting, but a back-of-house museum setting, where they would keep artifacts and relics. They would be numbered, with information about the weight, provenance and where they were discovered.In 2014, Arsham was named to the Hypebeast HB100 list, and has continued to remain on the Top 100 list to date. Some of Arsham's more recent collaborative endeavors exist in the fashion world. These include projects with brands such as Tiffany, Adidas, Dior, Toraichi, Byredo, Rimowa, and Porsche. Arsham's work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, The Athens Biennale in Athens, Greece, The New Museum in New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, Cincinnati CAC, SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah GA, California and Carré d'Art de Nîmes, France, among others. Longtime friends Ronnie Fieg and Arsham have collaborated on numerous projects. Snarkitecture has designed six KITH stores, located in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles among others. In June 2017, Daniel Arsham and adidas' New Installation opened at KITH New York. The store was transformed into an "audio, visual and tactile experience" with a functioning New York payphone as the centerpiece, painted in adidas' signature blue. October 2017 marked the opening of the Arsham Fieg gallery located inside KITH New York. The gallery has had exhibitions from FriendsWithYou, Evren Erol, Youn Lee, Mike Lee and Sam Friedman. In May 2019, Arsham collaborated with Rimowa on a 500 piece limited edition series of eroded suitcase sculptures contained in functional Rimowa attaché cases. Wyeth, she studied painting with her father and brother Andrew Wyeth at their home and studio in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Henrietta Wyeth was born in Wilmington, Delaware, into an artistic family. Wyeth was the eldest of the five children of noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth and his wife Carolyn Bockius. Her siblings Carolyn and Andrew also became artists, and all three studied with their father. Andrew Wyeth became the most well-known artist of this family. Henriette contracted polio at age 3, which altered her health and use of her right hand. As a result, she learned to draw with her left hand and paint with her right. She grew up on the family farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and attended local Quaker schools. She and her siblings were eventually homeschooled because their father distrusted the public school system. She began formal art lessons with her father at age 11, making charcoal studies and geometric shapes. A child prodigy, at age 13 Wyeth was enrolled in the Normal Arts School in Boston, Massachusetts. The next year, in 1921, she entered the Boston Museum of Art Academy. Two years later she moved to Philadelphia to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By age 16, she was well known as a portraitist and received commissions for paintings of Wilmington residents. Deeply influenced by her father's unique realistic style, she rejected early 20th-century painting styles such as Impressionism and Cubism. She was also socially and politically conservative. As a result, later in life she rejected the progressive movements of the 1960s and 1970s, including the women's movement. She often criticized television and modern culture. At age 21, in 1929 Wyeth married artist Peter Hurd, a fellow student at the Pennsylvania Academy and her father's apprentice.
