Untitled, Figurative, Ink & Pastel on Paper by Artist Jogen Chowdhury "In Stock

By Jogen Chowdhury

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

Jogen Chowdhury Untitled, Figurative, Ink & Pastel on Paper 5 x 6.5 inches , 2003 Signed in Bengali Style : He has immense contribution in inspiring young artists of India. Jogen Chowdhury had developed his individual style after his return from Paris. His most famous paintings are in ink, watercolor and pastel. He has painted in oil medium as well. In Chowdhury’s more recent works the sensory experiences of cloth, bolsters, sofas and the human body are cross-projected to produce an uncanny world of tran-substantiated tumescence and flaccidness. Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised – the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms. About the Artist and his work : Born : Born 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background : His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury’s father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board. Education : 1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. 1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17. Professional Experience : 1968-72 : He worked as an Art-Designer, Madras Handloom Board, Madras. 1970 : A collection of his poems were published, titled ‘Hridoy Train Beje Othey’. 1987 : Joined Kala Bhavan , Santiniketan as a professor of painting. Selected Exhibitions : 1972, 1975 & 1978 respectively : I, III, IV Triennales at New Delhi. 1979: The Sao Paolo Biennale. 1980: The exhibitions at the Fukuoka Museum, Japan. 1982: The Royal Academy, London. 1982: The Hirschhorn Museum, Washington D.C. 1986: The II Havana Biennale. 1989: ‘Festival of India’, in Geneva. 2002: Saffron...

He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media. About the Artist and his work : Born : In Calcutta, 1947. Kartick Chandra Pyne Untitled Watercolour on Paper 30 x 22.5 inches Untitled Watercolour on Paper 30 x 20 inches (Set of Two) Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Style : After graduating from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta in 1955 Pyne began to move away from the tenets of both classical Indian and Western art to respond to the beckoning of his own artistic impulses. Landscapes fascinated him initially. But along with the world of nature and flora emerged his own reconstructed images of fauna that often signified as metaphors of human passion and energy, and his paean to the elemental magic of women. This transition may have risen from his penchant for human psychology and observing the intricacies of human behavior. In the case of Pyne too, his artistic vision does not adhere to logic because he does not see with his eyes but rather through his subconscious mind -- in an act of surrender to the liberty of his dreamy vision -- with little control over the wanton caprice of his depictions. So, in this distinctive vein, he is perhaps the most seminal surrealist of the contemporary Indian art. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1937 in Calcutta, West Bengal. Education : 1955 Diploma in Fine Arts, Govt. College of Art and Craft, Calcutta. Exhibitions : 1961 : AIFACS, New Delhi. 1967, 80, 82 : Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. 1968-87 : Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. 1968 : Jehangir Art exhibition, Bombay. 1979 : 100 Years of Modern Indian Art, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan. 1988 : Chandigarh and Chitrakoot Art exhibition, Calcutta. 1991 : Calcutta 300 - Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Calcutta. 1991, 92, 93, 95, 97, 2001 : Chitrakoot Art , Calcutta. 1992 : Gandhara Art...

By Ashoke Mullick

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

Ashoke Mullick - Untitled - 24 x 24 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas. Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Style : Ashoke Mullick is considered one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art. Mullick combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions. His paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions he faces. He uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India. His paintings also includes a strong focus on the ordinary person – more specifically womankind and the contradictions it faces. The artist likes to portray the contemporary age where people have lost the human touch and have become increasingly impersonal in their behaviour. As a painter, he touches on these facets where customs are not being followed and the link between now and the past is getting hazy. He's carved out a niche for himself with his juxtaposition of real and unreal imagery infusing his canvases with bold, vibrant imagination and certain energy, which is extremely appealing. Mullick has been painting for the last 30 years. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1957, Calcutta. Education : 1981 - Graduated with first class in fine arts 1981-82 - Awarded Cultural Scholarship from the Government of India under Bikash Bhattacharya...

In the Village, Gouache on Paper, Pink & Red color by Gobardhan Ash "In Stock"

In the Village, Gouache on Paper, Pink & Red color by Gobardhan Ash "In Stock"

By Gobardhan Ash

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

Gobardhan Ash - Untitled - Gouache on Paper 10 x 15 inches (unframed size) Style : Regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art, Ash’s contribution at the time when India witnessed the advent of Western modernism is significant and colossal. His work was exploratory, visionary and inspiring. He printed with bold courage and a free spirit, never yielding to the rules set by official art. He rejected the preconceived notions of how an artist ought to render his subjects and inevitably rebelled against the academic rules “ If we look at nature in the open, we do not see individual objects each with its own colors but rather a bright medley of tints which blend in our eyes, in our minds.” – Gobardhan Ash (The Statesman, April 24, 1994). His verbal imagery alluded to what was real and relevant in India yet transcended to communicate a deeper, universal message about the human spirit. Disillusioned with the limits and constraints he faced, Ash withdrew into his private introspective world to explore his own mode of artistic expression. And although it was the convention then to paint divinities or exotic female figures on their way to the temple, Ash embarked on a new approach altogether to paint farmers toiling in the fields, workers engaged in intense labor to earn their living, thereby setting a new trend of socio-realistic art in India. In 1945, Ash was brought into the public eye when the progressive writers Association discovered his series of paintings on the Bengal famine. The paintings depict, if not document, the ravages of the 1943 catastrophe. In juxtaposition to the famine series, his impressionist and post impressionist gouaches during the late 40s come as an interesting antithesis. Colors, rich and vibrant, come alive in a pulsating tone to dominate the entire painting. Ash never subscribed to a stringent artistic form or technique. Rather, his works from the 80s display yet another intriguing and jarringly different style in his treatment of portraiture. His colors, with the exception of the apparent outlines, are reduced to smudges and smears so that the painting appear to originate from stained canvas. His subjects, spectral figures that engage and draw us within their profound state of despair and helplessness. To characterize the life works of Gobardhan Ash is to recognize the complexity and spontaneity of his ideas and the enormous richness of his style. An artist who devoted his entire life to art, his paintings have transited and evolved from monochromatic sketches and landscape to portraiture; from naturalistic real-life depictions to abstract expressionism. Whatever the genre style-Ash has demonstrated an eloquent mastery over the diverse style, techniques and medias employed, as evident in the vast retrospective collection. His paintings are conceptual and purposeful, displaying a unique individuality. His art expounds a frank desire to convey the value of uncompromising artistic sincerity. Gobardhan Ash remains today a prolific artist of his time. About the Artist & his works : Born : Regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art, Gobardhan Ash (1907-1996) was born at the village of Begampur in Hoogly district of West Bengal.. Family : His father was Haricharan Ash and mother Gouri Devi. He spent all his life in this village and died here in 1996 at the matured age...

Mohammad Osman - Gangireddu (Sacred Bulls) Acrylic on Canvas, 48 x 48 inches, 2020 Born in 1972 Originally from a village in Mahabubnagar district ,I draw inspiration heavily from village life.. I have completed my bachelors of fine arts from JNAFAU Hyderabad. My first solo show happened with gallery g in 2010.later after that I had many solo and group exhibitions. Recently I have been painting various versions of a bull that is traditionally decorated during sankranthi. I am touched with Indian culture and tradition and since past many years I have been working on this bull series and its also symbolic image of "SANKRANTI" festival. My childhood my village are the reasons for this gangireddu. I lived in a village for twenty five years and am strongly connected to my village and my roots there. And I have chosen Gangireddu because I found it very interesting with beautiful traditional elements in it. I feel it's nothing less than a beautiful composition of art. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: B. F. A ., (Painting) J.N.T.U , College of Fine Arts ,HYDERABAD. SOLO SHOWS: 2010 - Gallery – G , Bangalore. By Farhad Hussain

Farhad Hussain - Super Hero's Bathroom - 84 x 72 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Style: Farhad Hussain's colourful work that includes drawings and watercolours besides paintings on canvas, features day to day visual experiences of middle-class urban India. He endows his narrative with iconography and personality through his figuration, their posturing, dress and the surrounding imagery. The drama of subtle complexities of human relationships and social environment are grounded with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. Farhad’s colours help enhance the brightness and aura of his paintings while he also partakes elements from traditions such as the formulaic textile patterns of Indian miniatures. His compositions are often set in a familiar drawing room or a social space, playing out with humour and sarcasm, the narrative psychologies of human life and encounters at various levels. This young artist who has also experimented with sculpture has already carved a niche and an instantly recognizable individualistic style befitting his aesthetics and concerns. Farhad has chosen to use tempera on cloth for his works, the media allowing him to achieve the desired vibrancy of colours. A slow build-up of images and spontaneous flow of colour while balancing colour and composition simultaneously follow structured formatting. This meticulous planning in the composition and layout is the beginning of a process from where onwards it is very spontaneous and intuitive. Another technique used throughout Farhad’s work is the method of applying the colour: dot-by-dot till the entire area is completely covered. Various elements from miniature paintings, Kalighat paintings, Japanese prints and images from mass media are scrutinized, transformed and transferred on to the surface through the artists own style of expression.
