A beautifully understated pair of antique rush-seat chairs from Northern France, circa 1900. The frames have a deep ebonized finish that has been softened by decades of use into a lovely patina, with gentle wear along the edges revealing warm brown tones beneath the dark surface. The hand-woven rush seats add a natural, tactile counterpoint to the dark wood. Design The silhouette is classic Northern French country: slender proportions, gently arched back uprights, a wide curved top rail and a second back rail below it, all on a sturdy base with stretchers. These are honest, vernacular chairs, made for everyday use in farmhouses and village homes, and that simplicity is exactly what makes them so easy to combine with other furniture today. They work as functional seating and as sculptural styling pieces that add depth and history to a room without overpowering it. Condition Good antique condition, with wear to the ebonized finish and rush seats consistent with age and use. Please see the photos for details. Göran Malmvall (1917-2001), was born into the furniture & design industry. As the youngest son of the founder Karl Andersson of Karl Andersson & Sons/Söner. He studied at Carl Malmsten, which started a furniture making school 1930. Many designs of Malmvall are sometimes mistaken as Malmsten. Malmvall worked for his fathers company from an early age until 1982. Among his most known works are the Svensk Fur collection, Svitjod and the KA 72 cabinet series, which was designed in 1972.
