Pyx. Silver. Palencia, Spain. Pedro de Palacios, hallmark Juan de Peso, 16th c.

Located in Madrid, ES

Pyx. Silver. Palencia, Spain. Pedro de Palacios, hallmark Juan de Peso, circa 1530. With contrast and engraving marks. A circular box with a pointed lid, made of silver in its natural color and gilded, decorated on the exterior with a series of slanted segments or waves on the body and lid, and moldings with concatenations of pearls. The piece is topped by a sphere divided in two by a band of small lines. The interior is gilded. Typologically, it follows a very common model for pyxes in 16th-century Spanish silversmithing. Compare, for example, with the one dated to the third third of the 16th century (inventory 2165) in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid (Spain), which also has spirals on the lid and a cruciform finial that the present example does not have; or several examples in the Diocesan Museum of Pamplona Cathedral; or an example with vertical drawers in the lid in the Museum of Sacred Art of Bilbao (Eleiz Museoa; inventory 0578) by Izangabea, dated between 1525 and 1530. At the base are the engraving mark and the hallmarks of the town and silversmith. One is the town mark, referring to Palencia (Spain). Another, with letters beneath a scale, is that of the assayer Juan de Peso, who worked from 1526 to 1532 (experts suggest that the triple hallmarking began in 1528). The third is that of the silversmith Pedro de Palacios (elected city assayer in 1532). Similar marks appear on the reliquary arm...

Landscapes, Xalapa, Mexico, Pair of Oils on Canvas, Spanish School, Ca 1840
Landscapes, Xalapa, Mexico, Pair of Oils on Canvas, Spanish School, Ca 1840

Landscapes, Xalapa, Mexico, Pair of Oils on Canvas, Spanish School, Ca 1840

Located in Madrid, ES

Landscapes, Xalapa, Mexico. Pair of oils on canvas. Spanish school, around 1840. Provenance: Conde de la Cortina collection, Jalapa, Mexico. Couple of landscapes framed within the Spanish school of the first half of the 19th century, with a clear romantic affiliation. Both evidence the knowledge of the Dutch classicist landscape, one of the main influences on the Spanish romantic landscape. Thus, we see compositions in "V", closed on the sides and open in the center, very low horizons that allow a wide development of the sky, spaces built in depth based on successive planes subtly differentiated by light and color, and small figures perfectly integrated into the natural setting. In addition, the skies are scenographic and dramatic, with low clouds behind which the golden light characteristic of the classicist landscape filters. One of the most radical aspects of romantic painting was the attempt to replace large canvases with historical or religious themes with landscapes. They wanted the pure landscape, almost figureless or totally devoid of them, to achieve the heroic significance of history painting. They were based on the idea that human feeling and nature should be complementary, one reflected in the other. In other words, the landscape should arouse emotion and transmit ideas. Thus, landscapers like the author of these canvases tried to express their feelings through the landscape, instead of imitating it. The romantic landscape had two main aspects: the dramatic one, with turbulent and fantastic views, and the naturalistic one, which emphasized images of a peaceful and serene nature. This second conception is what we see embodied in these works; the painter tries to communicate a religious reverence for the landscape, nature in its fullness. In fact, the author's own use of light here conveys a foggy, cloudy, dreamlike atmosphere that invites the viewer to meditate and contemplate himself in the landscape. The romantic landscape is constituted, however, by manifestations of very different types and not comparable to each other; it does not affect all national schools equally, staying more faithful to tradition in schools such as the French or the Dutch. Thus, in this canvas we do not find the grandiose scenery of the British and Germans, the steep mountains or the monumental Gothic ruin...

Mary Magdalene on her way to Marseille. oil on board. Castilian school, towards the last third of the century XV. The Cardinal's Visit
The Cardinal's Visit

The Cardinal's Visit

Located in Madrid, ES

SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ BARBUDO Spanish, 1857 - 1917 THE CARDINAL'S VISIT signed, located and dated "Barbudo / ROMA 1902" (lower right) oil on canvas 22 x 33-2/3 inches (55.5 x 85.5 cm.) framed: 36-1/2 x 48-1/4 inches (92.5 x 122.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Munich LITERATURE Visita con el cardenal combines the two most salient characteristics of Sánchez-Barbudo's work: the search for novelty of theme and narrative content, and the use of minutely detailed brushwork and luminosity. Sánchez-Barbudo specialised in elaborate 'costume pictures', delighting the viewer with impressive details finely rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity. Here, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a well-to-do bourgeois family receiving a cardinal in their home. The interior, sumptuously furnished in the rococo style, along with the rich costumes and fabrics, are beautifully observed. Yet beyond the high technique lavished upon the composition, the treatment is comic and full of character and suffused with a gently satirising anti-clericalism. The cardinal, far from getting the attention he expects, is, literally, sidelined, his expression and body language showing his pique. There is no doubt that contemporary collectors and spectators took pleasure in the sight of noble self-respecting figureheads of the church being brought back down to earth. The comedy was appealing, and the message suited the prevailing political mood of an increasingly secular middle-class buying public. Salvador Sánchez Barbudo was born on March 14, 1857 in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). He was one of the most important Spanish artists of the "casacón" genre, who followed the Fortuny tradition in Rome. During his childhood he was under the protection of the Marquis del Castillo and in 1875 he moved to Seville where he attended the School of Fine Arts, becoming a disciple of José Villegas...
