This beautiful antique piece was carefully crafted at the workshops of Foster & Bailey in solid .925/.999 standard silver with a hinged lid. Ancient Roman glass flask bottle. An stupendous ancient glass flask, created during the Roman imperial period, between the 100 to 400 AD. Crafted in blown bi-color glass with spirals and swirled decorations. Measures: Height of 5.25 inches and a base diameter of 3 inches (133 mm by 76 mm). Ancient Roman Glass A large part of the ancient glass work repertoire was designed for table use, in particular for carrying and serving water and wine at banquets. Jugs, one of the most frequently used containers, existed in various dimensions (the smaller examples would contain condiments, the largest ones beverages) and shapes: a spherical or more elongated body, a flat or higher, molded base, a trefoil-shaped or circular and elaborate mouth. This example can certainly be dated to the Late Roman period because of the pale, greenish hue of the glass, the simple form of the base, wide mouth, indented rim and especially the presence of the spiraling patterns in low relief which are clearly visible on the body, having appeared as an ornament in glass work from the 4th century onward. This flat charger was crafted during the art deco period back in the early 1920 by the blown glass process. Made up in transparent amber glass with the upper rim accented by a stripe made up from blue pate d verre. Soffiato Glassblowing or Soffiato in Italian, is a glass forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble with the aid of a blowpipe. A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer. The word come from soffietta, a tool used as a puffer to further inflate a vessel after it has been removed from the blowpipe and is attached to the pontil. It consists of a curved metal tube attached to a conical nozzle. The glassblower reheats the vessel, inserts the nozzle into its mouth so that the aperture is blocked, and then inflates the vessel by blowing through the tube. Salviati & Co.
