Alvar Aalto for Iittala Finland Cobalt Blue Glass "Savoy" Wave Vase, 160mm

Alvar Aalto for Iittala Finland Cobalt Blue Glass "Savoy" Wave Vase, 160mm

By Alvar Aalto, Iittala

Located in St. Louis, MO

An iconic milestone of 20th-century Scandinavian design, this Savoy organic wave vase was designed by legendary Finnish architect and pioneer Alvar Aalto in 1936 and produced in Finland by Iittala. Hand-blown in a vibrant, saturated cobalt blue glass, the free-form undulating silhouette captures Aalto's signature organic modernism—inspired by the natural contours of Finnish lakes and waves. Iittala produced this rich, saturated cobalt blue color run during the late 1980s and 1990s. That run was discontinued in the late 1990s as Iittala refreshed its color palette, making examples from this era increasingly collectible. This piece features the authentic "ALVAR AALTO" acid-etched/acid-stamped signature on the underside, alongside its original red circular Iittala "i" decal label on the upper rim. Measuring 6.25" H x 8 1/8" W x 7 5/16" D, this piece serves as both a functional floral vessel and a standalone sculpture. The vase is in excellent vintage condition. The cobalt glass remains brilliant and clear with no chips, cracks, or flea bites, exhibiting only minor, light shelf scuffs to the underside base consistent with gentle display and handling. The acid stamp on the base is crisp and clear, and the original paper Iittala label remains intact on the exterior. Designed in 1936 by visionary Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the iconic Savoy vase was created for a competition held by the Karhula-Iittala glassworks ahead of the 1937 Paris World’s Fair. Inspired by the natural contours, fluid shorelines, and lakes of Finland—a thematic nod to Aalto’s own name, which translates to "wave" in Finnish—the design made history by breaking away from the rigid, geometric symmetry of traditional 1930s glassware...

The Peace is Power print by Shepard Fairey centers on the idea that peace is not passive, but an active and transformative force requiring empathy, diplomacy, creativity, and sustained effort. Rather than defining peace simply as the absence of conflict, Fairey frames it as the ability to resolve disagreement without violence—a process that demands patience, compassion, and collective responsibility. The composition prominently features the dove, an internationally recognized symbol of peace that has appeared throughout art history as an emblem of hope, reconciliation, and unity. Fairey employs the dove as both a visual anchor and a universal communication device, reinforcing the accessibility and immediacy of the work’s message. Consistent with his broader practice, Fairey combines bold graphic imagery with socially conscious themes, encouraging viewers to consider peace not as an abstract ideal but as a practical investment in the well-being of humanity and the planet. Originally conceived as a gesture for friends and family during the holiday season, the print was later released more broadly as an expression of gratitude to collectors and supporters. Through its direct symbolism and optimistic tone, Peace is Power reflects Fairey’s enduring belief in art’s capacity to inspire dialogue, solidarity, and constructive social values. Peace is Power print, Shepard Fairey dove...

1950s Carl Auböck Stamped Austrian Leather & Brass Loop Handle Wastepaper Basket

1950s Carl Auböck Stamped Austrian Leather & Brass Loop Handle Wastepaper Basket

By Werkstätte Carl Auböck

Located in St. Louis, MO

An exceptional, rare, and highly collectible Mid-Century Modern wastepaper basket, designed by the master of Austrian "tactile modernism," Carl Auböck II (1900–1957), and hand-crafted at the prestigious Werkstätte Carl Auböck in Vienna, Austria, circa 1950s. Officially designated as Model No. 4202 in the archival Auböck workshop records, this exquisite piece features a beautifully tapered cylindrical form—measuring 7.88 inches in diameter at the top and elegantly narrowing to 5.88 inches at the bottom—meticulously hand-wrapped in a rare white/cream-toned thick double-cowhide leather. The basket features structural vertical seams bound by contrasting, robust black hand-stitching that beautifully frames the piece. Serving as the design's signature focal point is a heavy, organically sculpted teardrop-shaped cast brass/bronze loop handle mounted to the front via a leather loop sleeve. The interior reveals a rich, warm natural cognac leather lining. Distinguishing itself entirely from common modern replicas and unauthorized reproductions, this rare vintage original features the definitive workshop hallmarks. Besides the proper dimensions, the bronze handle is crisply hand-stamped "Auböck" alongside the official "Made in Austria" origin mark, providing ironclad provenance for the serious collector. A quintessential example of the Bauhaus and Wiener Werkstätte traditions that defined the Auböck workshop, this functional objet d'art showcases an incredible, authentic original patina. Offered in very good vintage condition with age-appropriate light wear and minor scuffing to the white leather exterior, this investment-grade desk accessory is a magnificent addition for discerning collectors of fine mid-century Austrian design. Carl Aubock leather bin, Werkstatte Carl Aubock basket, Austrian mid century desk accessory, Vienna modern brass handle, Bauhaus waste basket leather, Illums Bolighus Aubock, Tactile modernism object, Luxury leather paper bin, 1950s Vienna office decor, Rare white leather basket.
