A fine antique English George III inlaid Sheraton Mahogany Bureau Secretary Chest, dating to the 18th century, circa 1770. This very elegant secretary chest in the late 18th century Sheraton style features an inlaid slant-front desk, that drops down and is supported by a pair of sliding lopers. The interior is fitted with pigeon holes and drawers, and a central locking door with a corresponding oval satinwood and ebony inlay. The fall front having a green baize writing surface above three graduated drawers, each drawer runs smooth, having the original oval brass handles and with an inlaid shield shaped lock escutcheon, key is present. All the secondary woods: drawer linings and back panels are made from white pine, the desk is of hand-dovetailed construction. The secretary chest is raised on flared French bracket feet, and joined with a shaped skirt. The desk is made from the finest figured Cuban mahogany, and retains the original finish, it is in remarkable original condition. This very elegant antique secretary chest...

A good antique English, Charles II (Carolean) period carved oak bible or document box, circa 1680. Such boxes were particularly popular in the 17th century, when printed bibles were very expensive and a treasured family possession. The bible was most likely the only book owned by a family and was also the means of recording births, deaths & marriages which would be written on the flyleaf or endpapers. They were also used to protect other important documents and valuables and were brought to colonial America by early settlers. This bible box dates shortly after the English Civil War & the brief time that England was a Republic (known then as the Commonwealth) under Oliver Cromwell. The box typifies those Puritan values, simple six plank construction with a hinged lid enclosing a storage area for a bible or important documents. The front of the box having a carved foliate twin lunette design with a hand cut steel lock & hasp above, the box is robust & solid & for it's 350 or so years it is in very good condition! The obelisk is very elegantly inlaid with a variety of semi-precious polished hard-stone, including Derbyshire Blue John, lapis lazuli, malachite, Carrara marble, polished agate etc. The top of the obelisk is inlaid with colored stone in a floral design, below is a mercury thermometer with the name "J, Turner Buxton", the thermometer is fully functioning, the base is also inlaid with colored stone in a floral design, the obelisk is raised on a stepped base.
