Standing over five and a half feet tall, this antique Louis XV giltwood mirror is distinguished by its impressive proportions, elaborate carved crest, and richly patinated gold leaf finish. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1860, the rectangular mirror features a gently arched top crowned with an ornate openwork cartouche, reflecting the decorative elegance of the French Rococo tradition.
The beautifully sculpted pediment is centered on a large pierced shell motif framed by sweeping C-scrolls, curling acanthus leaves, and delicate floral sprays extending symmetrically along the upper corners. The deeply carved ornamentation creates an attractive interplay of light and shadow, emphasizing the craftsmanship of the period.
The substantial giltwood frame follows the graceful arched silhouette and is embellished with a continuous raised bead-and-reel molding, complemented by a delicate inner beaded border. The original gold leaf finish displays warm tonal variations, subtle rubbing, and an attractive aged patina that accentuates the carved details.
The mirror retains its original beveled mercury glass plate, offering a clear reflection with subtle signs of age. The reverse is fitted with a traditional wooden plank backing, preserving the character of its 19th-century construction. A later hanging wire has been installed for convenient wall mounting.
