Created in China during the midcentury period, this wedding chest showcases a red lacquer perfectly complimenting its clean and elegant lines. The chest features a rectangular domed lid opening thanks to a traditional brass medallion lock to reveal a light honey brown varnished interior offering convenient storage opportunities. The façade showcases gilded calligraphy referring to blessing and longevity. This treasure chest was therefore likely a wedding gift, offered as part of the dowry. The façade's lower section presents a single drawer with ornate brass pull while the sides comprise of C-scroll handles allowing the piece to be moved more easily. Born in Panyu, Guangdong, in 1942, Kan Tai-Keung was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Yao Sheung, and became passionate about painting from childhood on.
