19th Century Carved Chinese Windows, Set of 4

About the Item

This set of four, Chinese carved window screens is from an 19th century house from the Shanxi province of China. Carved from Chinese Northern Elm, the center lattice work is carved the longevity symbol (shou). The four carved Chinese calligraphy translate to: “serve your ancestors and think about filial piety” ?fèng, taking care of your elderly. ?si, thinking, or missing, in this case meaning you need to think about your elderly or ancestors. ?xian, before, in this case it means elderly or ancestry ?Xiào, filial piety. The windows are hand carved and finely crafted with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The windows were covered with silk or paper during the winter and left open when the weather permitted. The window has the original pegs to hold them into the frames. Size of the individual windows is 1.5”D x 14”W x 57.25”H (without pegs) 59.75”H (including pegs).
