Emilio Grau Sala Nace en Barcelona en 1911. Maestro catalán de la Escuela de París, recordado por sus magníficas escenas realistas. Se forma en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. Tras varias exposiciones en su ciudad natal y ya siendo un pintor de éxito, contrae matrimonio con la pintora Ángeles Santos Torroella. De ambos nacerá en 1937 el futuro pintor Julián Grau Santos. En 1936 expuso en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Madrid y, coincidiendo con el inicio de la Guerra Civil Española, se traslada a París. Conoció de cerca las vanguardias inclinándose por una figuración colorista, derivada del impresionismo y el fauvismo. Allí entrará rápidamente en contacto con el núcleo de artistas españoles. Realiza una pintura próxima al postimpresionismo francés, con un marcado acento lírico. En París alcanzó un gran éxito realizando multitud de exposiciones. En 1936 recibe el Premio Carnegie. Grau Sala destaca, además, como creador de escenarios teatrales y como excelente ilustrador. Fallece en Barcelona en 1975. Celebró diversas muestras individuales, sobre todo en Barcelona y París, pero también en ciudades como Nueva York, Toulouse, Londres o los Ángeles. En el 2015, su hijo Julián Grau Santos cede la obra familiar de su padre para la venta a Beatriz Bálgoma como marchante. Essay: Painted during Carl Johansson’s journey to Tenerife in 1894, Lavaklippstrand presents the volcanic Atlantic coastline as an austere study of rock, water and light. Jagged formations of dark lava dominate the foreground and middle distance, breaking the surface of the sea in an irregular progression towards the horizon. Behind them, the coast dissolves gradually into mist, while the almost colourless sky occupies the upper half of the composition. The painting is unusually restrained for a landscape executed during a period when Johansson had recently encountered the brighter palette of modern French painting. Here, instead, he deliberately reduces the scene to a near monochrome range of blacks, greys, browns and white. Johansson was born in Härnösand in 1863 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1882 and 1885, where his teachers included Edvard Perséus and the landscape painter Per Daniel Holm. He belonged to the generation of Swedish artists that increasingly looked beyond academic landscape conventions during the 1880s and 1890s. Maurice Élie Sarthou (French, 1911-1999) "Composition" Edition 209/220, Abstract Lithograph signed and numbered in Pencil, 18.50 x 24.63, Late 20th Century, ca. 1960s Colors: Green, Black, Yellow, Purple, Orange Sarthou was born in Bayonne on January 15, 1911; an orphan following the death of his father during the First World War, he was raised by his mother and grandfather in Montpellier. After high school, in 1927, he obtained the authorization to enter the Beaux-Arts of the city provided he prepared architecture. After a year, he persuades his family to let him study at the painting studio. He first attended a training at the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier; Then in 1930, a fellow of the city of Montpellier as the ward of the nation, he entered the Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1934, birth of Francine, his daughter. To make a living, he introduces himself to the drawing faculty. He was appointed to Bastia, then in 1937 to Bordeaux. In 1949 he was chosen by Jacques Lassaigne, who came to Bordeaux to preside over the regional selection of the Prix de la Jeune Peinture. He won the price Drouant, the first mention of the price (fourth prize on more than 90 competitors, including Lagrange, Lapoujade, Rebeyrolle, also mentioned). In the jury, Gaston Diehl noticed him and invited him to the Salon de Mai of which he is the founder. It is the first manifestation of Sarthou with the Parisian public with two paintings: "Still life" and "Open window". He will participate in this show until 1963. He moved to Paris in 1950, where he was appointed professor of drawing at Lycée Henri IV, which allowed him to exhibit in the salons of the capital and to be more recognized.
