John Edward Bale, was born at Low Farm House, Pattesley-cum-Oxwick,
South Creake, Norfolk on 27 July and baptised at South Creake on
1 August 1834, eldest child of John Edward Bale (1803-27 April 1862),
a farmer of 620 acres, and his wife Mary née Branford,
who married at Horningtoft, Norfolk on 27 November 1833. In 1841,
a 6 year old, living at Low Farm with his parents, 35 year old John and
28 year old Mary, and his two sisters, Mary 3 and Esther 1. In 1861,
a 26 year old 'artist architecture' boarding at 11 Bulstrode Street,
Marylebone, London but in October 1863, he was an Ensign by purchase
in the 1st West Indian Regiment. As a lieutenant, whilst on a tour of
duty in West Africa, Surgeon Major Augustus Frederick Elliott (born 1834),
kept a diary (now at Duke University Library) which is embellished with
calligraphy and watercolour titles by Bale. During this tour, Bale was
promoted to Captain and retired from the army in 1881 with the rank of major.
Bale married at Christ Church, Ealing on 10 November 1868,
Charlotte Gordon Lee née Johnson (c1847-1910).
A painter in oil and watercolour and a member of the Ipswich
Fine Art Club 1886-1890 and as Major Bale exhibited from 9 Creffield Terrace,

Claude Gaveau (1906 - 1970) is a French painter born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in 1940. The painter was born near Paris and studied there as well as in Belgium. He comes from a family of artists, his grandfather was the creator of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He is passionate since very young about painting and entered the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris in 1955 where he studied mural art for five years, stained glass, tapestry, mosaic and fresco. In 1960, he studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming equally accomplished in oil painting, watercolor, drawing and lithography, pastel and gouache. Influenced by great Post Impressionist painters such as Paul Cézanne, George Braque and Raoul Dufy, Gaveau gets inspired as well by music and lyricism. His talent was quickly recognized, in 1963 he won his first prize and obtained a scholarship from the Academy of Antwerp, Belgium which allowed him to study Flemish painting in Brussels. In 1965, with only 25 years, he made his first solo exhibition at the Angle Aigu Gallery in Paris. His career took a real turn in 1968 when he was nominated for the "la Critique Parrainé" Award by the Saint Placide Gallery in Paris. A recurrent traveler, the landscapes he observes all around the world allow him to broaden his artistic palette. Other exhibitions of his work followed during the 1960’s and 1970’s in France with the Galerie Vauban in Dijon in 1967, 1968 and 1970; with the Galerie Saint Placide in Paris in 1968; with the Galerie Marc Hudier in Belfort in 1970; and three one-man shows with the Galerie La Belle Gabrielle in Paris in 1972, 1975 and 1978. I wanted to create a painting with the light as a focal point. An image which is beautiful, uplifting and has an ethereal feel to it. The painting is quite textured and needs to be seen in real life to fully appreciate the beauty of the gold leaf glistening through the leaves.
Contemporary artist Sophia Chalklen sold online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Sophia has always had a strong passion for Art ever since she was a child. Sophia studied at Winchester school of Art where she completed a BA specialising in Textile design. After achieving her BA she went on to become a Freelance Printed Textile designer for a small company in London. Shortly after that she managed to get a job as a Fine Jewellery Designer for the Crown Jewellers, Asprey and Garrard Bond St. Sophia became a specialist in designing high end Jewellery, accessories, and ornaments for English and Middle Eastern Royalty and the Elite. She also designed a great variety of items including rings, Jewellery Suites, watches, cufflinks, Jewel incrusted clocks, tiaras and precious ornaments. Her eye for detail leant well to her career in jewellery design and she became an expert in her field.
