Cubist Art

CUBIST STYLE

Inspired by the nontraditional ways Postimpressionists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat depicted the world, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered an even more abstract style in which reality was fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Cubism majorly influenced 20th-century Western art as it radically broke with the adherence to composition and linear perspectives that dated back to the Renaissance. Its watershed moments are considered Picasso’s 1907 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in which nude figures are fractured into angular shapes, and Georges Braque’s 1908 painting show, which prompted a critic to describe his visual reductions as “cubes.”

Although Cubism was a revolutionary art movement for European culture, it was informed by African masks and other tribal art. Its artists, which included Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris and Jean Metzinger, experimented with compressing space and playing with the tension between solid and void forms in their work. While their subjects were often conventional, such as still lifes, nudes and landscapes, they were distorted without any illusion of realism.

Cubist art evolved through different distinct phases. In Analytic Cubism, from 1908 to 1912, figures or objects were “analyzed” into pieces that were reassembled in paintings and sculptures, as if presenting the same subject matter from many perspectives at once. The palette was usually monochromatic and muted, giving attention to the overlapping planes. Synthetic Cubism, dating from 1912 to 1914, moved to brighter colors and a further flattening of images. This unmooring from formal ideas of art would shape numerous styles that followed, from Dada to Surrealism.

La Danse embodies Picasso’s vigorous exploration of movement and mythic vitality, rendered through expressive contour and rhythmic composition that reflect his sustained reinvention of classical themes in the 1950s. Executed as a lithograph on grand velin Renage filigrane paper with la marque de l'editeur, this work measures 12.625 x 9.75 inches (32.07 x 24.77 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. About the Publication: Picasso Lithographe III, 1949-1956 (Picasso Lithographer III, 1949-1956), published in 1956 by Editions du Livre, Monte-Carlo, under the direction of Andre Sauret in collaboration with Fernand Mourlot, represents the culminating volume in the foundational survey of Picasso’s lithographic production. Covering a period of extraordinary experimentation, the publication documents Picasso’s sustained engagement with lithography as an autonomous and innovative medium. Printed on grand velin Renage filigrane paper bearing the publisher’s watermark, the edition exemplifies the highest standards of mid twentieth century French art publishing, uniting rigorous documentation with masterful printing. The partnership between Picasso and the Mourlot atelier played a transformative role in advancing modern lithography, and this volume stands as an essential scholarly reference for collectors, museums, and historians. As part of the broader Picasso Lithographe project, the publication solidified the importance of printmaking within Picasso’s oeuvre and reinforced the album format as a vehicle for serious modern art scholarship. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso’s career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d'Alger (Version "O") achieved a record-breaking sale of $179,365,000 at Christie's, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso's enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history. This exquisite lithograph by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled La Petite Corrida (The Little Bullfight), from the album Special issue of the XX Siecle Review, Hommage a Picasso, originates from the 1971 edition published by Tudor Publishing Co., New York, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. La Petite Corrida reflects Picasso’s lifelong fascination with the bullfight—a subject that symbolized vitality, struggle, and creation throughout his career. Executed with the spontaneity and graphic brilliance characteristic of his late lithographs, the composition captures both movement and ritual, merging ancient spectacle with modern energy. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris, the atelier that produced many of Picasso’s greatest lithographic works. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Hommage a Picasso, published 1971 by Tudor Publishing Co. and Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris About the Publication: Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. The Yellow Mandolin

The Yellow Mandolin

By Maurice Green

Located in West Hollywood, CA

Premiering for the first time in three decades, the original paintings of American artist Maurice Green. Born in 1908 in Latvia, Maurice Green studied with prominent artists of the day before settling in Los Angeles in the 1930’s. The artist continued his art education and began exhibiting throughout galleries in Southern California. As with many artists, his earliest style was more realist imagery, transitioning through his intense fascination with the cubist avant-garde movement, into specific cubist imagery which became the trademark style of painting for the remainder of his life. This is the first presentation of the paintings of Maurice Green since his death in 1993. “The Yellow Mandolin”, is an exceptional early work, an original oil on canvas, signed, dated 1974, with an image dimension of 40 x 30 inches; a painting which clearly defines his talent as a fine cubist artist...
