Cubist Art

CUBIST STYLE

Inspired by the nontraditional ways Postimpressionists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat depicted the world, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered an even more abstract style in which reality was fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Cubism majorly influenced 20th-century Western art as it radically broke with the adherence to composition and linear perspectives that dated back to the Renaissance. Its watershed moments are considered Picasso’s 1907 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in which nude figures are fractured into angular shapes, and Georges Braque’s 1908 painting show, which prompted a critic to describe his visual reductions as “cubes.”

Although Cubism was a revolutionary art movement for European culture, it was informed by African masks and other tribal art. Its artists, which included Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris and Jean Metzinger, experimented with compressing space and playing with the tension between solid and void forms in their work. While their subjects were often conventional, such as still lifes, nudes and landscapes, they were distorted without any illusion of realism.

Cubist art evolved through different distinct phases. In Analytic Cubism, from 1908 to 1912, figures or objects were “analyzed” into pieces that were reassembled in paintings and sculptures, as if presenting the same subject matter from many perspectives at once. The palette was usually monochromatic and muted, giving attention to the overlapping planes. Synthetic Cubism, dating from 1912 to 1914, moved to brighter colors and a further flattening of images. This unmooring from formal ideas of art would shape numerous styles that followed, from Dada to Surrealism.

French Modern Cubist Figurative Abstraction — Aegina Greece, Deep Blue Green

By Grégoire Mathias

Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR

Couple à Aegina (A Couple in Aegina) Acrylic on Canvas 61 x 50 cm Couple à Aegina presents two intertwined figures assembled within a structured architectural setting inspired by the Greek island of Aegina. Rather than depicting a fixed scene, the composition builds from fragments — bodies, objects, spatial planes — held together through vertical alignment and interlocking geometry, so that figure and environment become genuinely inseparable. A central elongated form anchors the work, while surrounding elements — suggestive of musical instruments, interior structures, and architectural detail — intersect and layer. The figures remain partially legible, continuously shifting between presence and abstraction as they absorb and release the forms around them. The palette is restrained and deliberate: deep blacks and muted blues form the dominant ground, punctuated by sage greens and lighter neutral passages. Small circular accents and linear elements move across the surface, creating an internal rhythm that draws the eye without dictating a fixed entry point. This is not a scene captured at a single moment. Working through what he calls a "reverse jigsaw logic" — beginning with a figurative view of reality, then fragmenting and recomposing it — Mathias brings multiple perceptions into one field: variations in viewpoint, shifts in spatial relation, different moments of observation layered together. Like his figurative works more broadly, the human presence here is never isolated; it is always integrated with place, absorbed into the architecture and light of Aegina itself. Living with the Work: Before acquiring this piece, consider: at 61 x 50 cm, this is an intimate format — best suited to a space where you will naturally spend time close to it, rather than a large wall viewed from across a room. Does the space you have in mind allow for that? Does your interior already carry deep blacks, blues or greens, or would this palette introduce a contrast you'd find interesting to live with? Are you drawn to the human figure as a subject, or does the way the figures here dissolve into their architectural surroundings — becoming part of the place rather than standing apart from it — feel like the more compelling idea? Collector's Insight Rooted in the direct lineage of Jean Metzinger — whose disciple Claude Augereau was Mathias's professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris — this work extends the structural logic of European Cubism into a genuinely original proposition. Where Cubism fragmented space, Diachronic Cubism fragments time itself, embedding successive moments of perception within a single composition. The result sits comfortably within the tradition of Gris and Gromaire while belonging to no one but Mathias. About the Artist Grégoire Mathias, graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, is the pioneer of Diachronic Cubism — an evolution of the cubist tradition that captures not only multiple points in space but multiple moments in time within a single work. His paintings have been exhibited in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Bordeaux, and Dublin. Since 2020, he has been the official artist of the WFUNA (World Federation of United Nations Associations), designing posters for United Nations Day in Geneva — the first French artist commissioned to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. He studied art at an early age, earning a scholarship at the Vilna Art School in Russia, 1908–12. He immigrated to the United States at age 17 in 1913, living in New York with his sister for eight months and then moving to Omaha, Nebraska, to live with his brother in 1915. Working as a house painter, he turned his attention to art, studying briefly with J. Laurie Wallace at the Kellom School in Omaha before moving to Chicago. He entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1916, studying with Ivan Trutnev and Karl A. Buehr, and graduating with honors in life drawing, portraiture, and painting in 1917. Pablo Picasso A.R. 182 Corrida 1953 17” round Edition of 200 White earthenware clay, partially glazed. Ramie 182 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market. The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive. Small blemish on rim, see photo #3 for detail. The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece. We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews. We are located in the USA. When you buy from a foreign seller on 1stdibs, you have to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item. When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when you “win” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay the packing and shipping fees, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. When you purchase from an auction house, the sale is final. If you receive the piece and are not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing you can do about it. You are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer can determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! The prices of Picasso Madoura Ceramics have been on fire lately (no pun intended). The major auction houses – Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips – have now been regularly holding Picasso Madoura Ceramic auctions...

Mid Century Cubist Oil Painting of Woman with Flowers in Style of Jacques Villon

Located in Soquel, CA

Wonderful mid century cubist figurative of older woman with flowers and basket in style of Jacques Villon (French, 1875 - 1963). Signature (Possibly "Louyot") and dated "1964" lower right corner. Presented in original, gilt-toned painted frame (included as-is). Image size: 36"H x 25"W An early 1900s modern art movement, Cubism focused on exploring relationships between images, perspectives and materials, and opened the door to Abstraction. Cubism began in Paris with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The term 'Cubist' was a derisive description by a critic of a geometric landscape painting done by Braque in 1908. Juan Gris, the originator of Collage, joined Picasso and Braque in 1910. Originating influences on Cubism included geometric-shaped paintings of Paul Cezanne, Post-Impressionisms’ emphasis on flat picture surfaces, and Picasso's fascination with the abstraction he perceived in African tribal masks. Aspects of Cubism were Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism (see Glossary). By 1914, the Cubist movement as an organizing force officially terminated with the beginning of World War I. But its effects remain today. "Almost all later art, figurative and abstract, two and three-dimensional, random or hieratic, was conditioned in some way by these new dimensions of reality." (Phaidon) Other French artists associated with Cubism concepts were Fernand Leger, Marcel Duchamp and Nicholas Delauney. In America, leading Cubist painters...

The bold shapes and saturated colors lend the work a festive, almost theatrical quality, echoing the traditions of Synthetic Cubism while infusing it with Mathias’s characteristic rhythm and modern eye. Painted in acrylic on canvas board, the piece is framed in a substantial gilded frame that enhances its presence.
