I love their lines and shapes at low tide. These I came across on a coastal walk in Suffolk. The sun was setting and I tried to capture the effect of light on water. Rob Barnes, artist, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. Rob Barnes studied painting and printmaking at Hull College of Art and London University in the early 1960s. He taught etching, screen-printing, lino and related surface printmaking at Keswick Hall College in Norfolk. He later moved to the University of East Anglia, Norwich where he continued teaching in the School of Education until 2006. Presently he divides his time between printmaking and his other passion, playing the violin in local orchestras and for choral performances. In 2017 he began making a small number of sterling silver jewellery pieces following a course at West Dean, Sussex. His artwork follows themes, such as light on water, or shadows in the landscape. Linocuts are hand-printed on an Albion press...

The Butcher Came and Slew the Ox, 1984

The Butcher Came and Slew the Ox, 1984

By Frank Stella

Located in Palo Alto, CA

Frank Stella print The Butcher Came and Slew the Ox, Pl.8 from Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya, 1984, recalls the post-painterly abstraction known to have influenced Stella with added elements that reflect collage and cut-out effects. Inspired after seeing an exhibition in 1919 by the Russian avant-garde artist El Lissitzky (1890-1941) who had created a series of gouaches illustrating the traditional Jewish Passover song, Had Gadya (The Only Kid), Stella created his own, one of which you see before you. With movement and vibrancy, each piece in the series illustrates each line of the song, as Lissitzky had done. What makes The Had Gadya series so pivotal in Stella’s oeuvre however is that it is the introduction of both the 'wave' motif, which inspired the seminal Moby-Dick series and his Cones and Pillars iconography. This stunning work is bursting with color and movement. Shades of green, coral and yellow dominate the piece. Like a music piece, each component of the collage forms an upbeat composition. Central to the scene are lime green cones and pillars which are reminiscent of Stella’s previous Cones and Pillars series. Above, sinuous red lines curve to form an abstract image. Viewed together, the colors and forms are a testament to Stella’s artistic past and future. Created in 1984, Frank Stella The Butcher Came and Slew the Ox, Pl.8 from Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya, 1984 is a color screen print, lithograph and linocut with hand-coloring and collage is hand-signed by Frank Stella (Massachusetts,1936 - New York, 2024) in pencil in the lower right of the image. Numbered 16 from the edition of 60 in pencil in the lower margin. Frank Stella Had Gadya...

Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959

By Pablo Picasso

Located in Palo Alto, CA

Considered to be one of Picasso’s monumental linoleum prints, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959 is a large-scale artwork that captures the essence of this artist’s innovation and minimalist creativity. His simple lines curve and undulated together to form the characters of the piece: the woman – feminine and robust, the horse – whimsical and characteristic, and the picador – strong and masculine. All three subjects create a triad composition making way for a harmonious and balanced piece. The entire work exudes an air of femininity and mystery, all set against a backdrop of a misty grey helping to create Picasso’s sensual environment of intrigue. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse) is a color linocut on Arches paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 21/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: Pablo Picasso Picador, Woman, and Horse (Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme), 1959 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work): 1. "Teeny" lithograph by Henri Matissse

By (after) Henri Matisse

Located in Hinsdale, IL

HENRI MATISSE (1869 – 1954) Teeny Duthuit-Garnaud 723 Linocut, c. 1938 From an edition of 1500 Image Size: 12.2” x 9.5” Published in The Homage to Henri Matisse Published by Galerie d’Art Contemporain de Paris Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954. Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art. Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model. Matisse’s etchings...

Sailing at Blakeney Point, Contemporary Linocut Seascape Print, Sailing Boat Art

By Joanna Padfield

Located in Deddington, GB

Sailing at Blakeney Point is inspired by summer sailing trips from Morston to Blakeney Point in North Norfolk. In the foreground are flowers and plants typically found along the marches of the Norfolk coast. A Sailing barge is sailing back towards Morston and Blakeney Point can be seen in the distance . Jo Padfield, printmaker and artist, is available for sale online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Jo Padfield is an artist based in rural Norfolk - I love the natural world and my work celebrates nature and the natural environment, using bright vibrant colours and bold eye catching shapes and patterns. After studying at Norwich School of Art I went on to study and work in architecture. As my path in design continued, I have developed my love of colour and graphics in print making to create linocut prints. I like the process of cutting fresh lino with sharp tools and the anticipation of peeling paper off an inked block...

By Ellen Von Wiegand

Located in Laguna Beach, CA

ELLEN VON WIEGAND Cold and Quiet, Ed of 5 Linocut on Awagami Shiramine Paper (Unframed) 35.50 x 53 in. Ellen Von Wiegand’s body of work reverberates with a quest for self-assurance and serenity as she uses her own nude body within her stylized prints. In a new series of large scale, limited edition linocuts now on view at JoAnne Artman Gallery’s Laguna Beach location, her portraits feature a distinctive use of line to establish composition, as well as a tool to divide space and color into defined, physical boundaries. As opposed to digital prints, linocuts celebrate the long tradition of handmade editioned art that has been practiced for nearly two millennia. While woodblock printmaking goes back thousands of years, artists like Picasso popularized linocut in the early part of the 20th century due to wider availability of linoleum. “All parts of my process are done by hand, from the original drawing, to the carving, and final printing. In order to produce a work in multiple colors, separate blocks need to be carved and printed for each hue. As a result, creating a limited edition of colorful prints is quite time consuming and requires a great deal of patience. And while there are multiple prints created from the same plates, each one is truly an original work of art” Von Wiegand explains. Reminiscent of ancient Corinthian Black...
