Signed lower right, in pencil, 'Ross Wetzel' (American, 1917 - 2013), titled lower left, 'E Pluribus Unum' and with number and limitation, '118/300'. Paper dimensions: 14 x 21 inches. Born in Chicago, Ross Wetzel was an avid art student through high school, and then enrolled- with his future wife and fellow artist, Janice- at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He was soon working for Walt Disney Productions, taking lead production roles in the creation of such Disney classics as Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi. During the Second World War, he served with the Motion Picture Unit of the First Army Air Corp under Ronald Reagan, creating training films for fighter pilots and bombers and working beside actors including Alan Ladd and Clark Gable. After the War, Ross and Janice started a serigraphy business, which came to be known as Ross Wetzel Studios creating animated commercials and print advertisements for companies such as Kellogg's, Kleenex and Continental Airlines that featured such characters as Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam. It is in very good, never-framed condition with no flaws to note. Jean Marie Haessle was born in Buhl, Haut-Rhin, France. After living for a few years in Paris, he moved to New York City in 1967 where he still works and lives in his studio on Spring Street in Soho. Over the years, he had numerous shows in the US, New York, Miami, Texas and California, France and Italy (see the resume). In the mid-80’s he worked for a period in France (Paris, Lyon, and Cannes). In the late 90’s he worked in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) where he had a one person show in 1997 in the Museo de Art in Queretaro. He had a survey exhibition of the last 30 years of his work at the Korean University Museum, Seoul, Korea in spring 2014 and a major one person show in the Namu Modern &Contemporary gallery in Seoul in September of the same year. In September 2016 he had a sold out show at the Wada Garou gallery in Tokyo, Japan. In recent years, he had numerous shows in Korea, Seoul and Busan as well as in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. And it was a very fascinating time because it was a highly conceptually based school. Very much influenced by Joseph Beuys, and European Conceptualism, I didn’t really like the atmosphere there that much, because it was dominated by male painters like Jörg Immendorf, Marcus Lupertz, and a few others. then came to New York to study at SVA for two years. New York in 1978 was exciting. I was very lucky to be in a class that was full of very bubbly and very energetic artists like Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Tim Rollins, Moira Dryer, Frank Holliday, and Tom Cugliani (who later became one of my dealers).The eighties were dominated largely by Neo-Expressionist paintings. There were Germans, such as Baselitz, Kiefer, Richter, Penck, and the Italians, Clemente, Chia, Cucchi, Palladino as well as Schnabel, Fischl, Basquiat, Salle, and many others, but all of their paintings were figuratively based. But below the popular consent, there was a group of painters who were working more in the vein of what Stephen Westfall referred to as “Neo-Surrealism,” including George Condo, Jeffrey Wasserman, Kenneth Scharf, David Humphrey. However, I felt that Carroll Dunham and you were the only two painters who seemed to be less interested in the kind of narrative, lyrical, or let’s say, stationary composition. He belongs to the generation of Terry Winters, Elizabeth Murray, David Reed and Jonathan Lasker but in some strange way, if we’re looking back to the mid-eighties, we have to include New Image painters like Susan Rothenberg, Neil Jenney, and Robert Moskowitz who were working in between the figure and abstraction with a kind of condensation and compression, in relationship, lets say, to cartoon imagery. There are artists like Jeff Koons, or even Damien Hirst who took the Duchampian aspect and brought it into the continuity of his readymade. But for me, I see no difference between the crack in “Large Glass” and the drips in Jackson Pollock’s paintings. There was something that I felt in my own equation of the continuity between Paul Klee, Duchamp, Picabia, and, oddly enough, Clyfford Still. What essentially is important is how different artists carry on a dialogue among themselves so that they can all keep their work vital. Whether from the abstract paintings of Richmond Burton, Fabian Marcaccio extending the borders of his paintings on to the wall, or Cady Noland’s early scattered installation, my own pre-occupation with machinery, urban environment, and the Duchampian models has always materialized in relationship to other forms of art making. Asaf Ben Zvi, Israeli contemporary artist, was born in Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, 1953. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and the Pratt Institute, New York. Laureate of numerous awards, notably the Rappaport Prize for an Established Artist for 2011, Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Lives and works in Jerusalem. He did his army service in a commando unit and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his discharge from the army he settled in Jerusalem and became interested in bird-watching. In 1981 he began to study architecture at Bezalel, but transferred to the art department. During the period of his studies, he worked primarily in sculpture, but after a period of study in New York, he began to paint as well. From the mid-1980s he made use of simple figures, so abstracted in their form that they became symbolic figures. Some of these figures were connected to biographical baggage, while others were based on trivial events. Many of his works are based on poetic texts that show his interest in esthetics and in the relationship between the painter and society. In 1981, he enrolled in the Art department at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. During his studies, he participated in a student exchange program at the Pratt Institute in New York. From the outset, Ben Zvi’s focus has been on nature and the environment. Ecological and human disasters and natural disasters initially played an main role in his work and received expression through various fields of color, with motifs such as a cross, a water flask, a wasp, butterfly or bird, symbolizing the fragile human existence steeped in an eternal struggle. In his later work, words penetrate the space of his paintings and art, reflecting on the private, public, local and universal realms. "Ben Zvi at his best is a visual poet, one who places words with great sensitivity to their tone and sometimes relinquishes the splendor of an image in favor of text and message."
