Provenance: private collection - a longtime museum curator, New York, NY. Printed in nine colors: ivory, black, yellow, blue, red, violet, orange, green, and white. This work was created as the cover for "Jasper Johns Screenprints", a 28 page exhibition catalogue produced for a special exhibition of Johns' screenprint editions of the same title at Brooke Alexander Inc., New York, NY from November 15th, 1977 - January 7th, 1978. It was designed by David Smoak, with photography by Eric Pollitzer and printed by Siena Studios, New York, NY. This complete exhibition catalogue with an essay by Richard S. Field and documents 14 screenprint editions exhibited at the show is included and comes with the framed artwork, (within sleeve on verso). Despite the large edition of 3,000, complete copies of "Jasper Johns Screenprints" with the screenprint cover together like our example here are now scarce since many have been separated for framing.
Biography:
Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker associated with Abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop art. Johns is well known for his depictions of the American flag and other US-related topics. Johns' works regularly receive millions of dollars at sale and auction, including a reported $110 million sale in 2010. At multiple times works by Johns have held the title of most paid for a work by a living artist. Johns has received many honors throughout his career, including receipt of the National Medal of Arts in 1990, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker born on May 15, 1930. He eventually became one of America's best known post–Abstract Expressionists and Minimalists.
Johns's name is most often associated with pictorial images of flags and numbers and Pop art subjects that he depicted in Minimalist style with an emphasis on linearity, repetition and symmetry. He completed his first flag painting in 1955, alphabet subjects in 1956, sculpture in 1958 and lithographs in 1960.
