This exhibition highlights Adam Gunn’s latest work, consisting of oil paintings on wood panels. This recent body of work was inspired by three coinciding events in the artist’s life: his return to his home province of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, at the height of the Covid pandemic, obtaining his driver’s license, and his introduction to plein air painting by local artists. The artist traveled through his home province, painting on-site to capture the natural beauty and illustrate the diversity of Nova Scotia’s landscape (Project made possible through a grant from Arts Nova Scotia). Inspired by the artists of the Modern Art era, including Post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne, Kang visualizes the modern day search for identity in an age where information and images permeate every aspect of contemporary life. Tae Ho Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1945. He studied at the College of Arts of Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. He later moved to California to study Fine Art at California State University, where he graduated in 1980. Since then, his artworks have focused on the never-ending quest for home and belonging in a dense urban landscape. About his mixed media artworks, he remarks: “One day, when I was traveling, I was impressed by the beautiful scenery of the city under the sky, with many straight lines, curved lines, and harmonies of different colors, which seemed to be a magnificent orchestral performance. The beauty of this urban landscape gave me a deep impression and great change began to take place in my work. I wanted to be a molecule in this huge space. I have to find a house of my heart to be molecule. Where is the house I live in? What is my identity? This question has begun to arise. I am on a long journey to find my own house.” His mixed media collage artworks have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions as well as international art fairs throughout the US and in Korea. While working on a large building project several years ago the artist, Fritz Horstman was struck by the poetry in the unfinished state of the construction site. He was drawn specifically to the space between the plywood walls that were raised as formworks for the pouring of cement. That space could only exist for a few hours before the cement truck arrived, but in that moment it was a revolving abstraction of potential, delineation, growth, and destruction. Once filled it was gone: the plywood was stripped away, the earth was backfilled. To suspend that moment he began building models of formworks. Leaving them unfilled, they are perpetually unfinished. From models based directly on architecture, Horstman expanded to forms found in the landscape. Making a formwork that depicts constraint upon the landscape is not exactly a reversal of the formwork’s function, but it asks different questions than a formwork designed for a building would.
