"Galloping Horse and Rider" Alessio Issupoff (1889 Russia-1957 Rome) Oil on wood panel Signed lower right 5 1/2 x8 1/2 (13 1/2 x 16 1/2 frame) inches This is such a stunning little jewel, it's almost hard to believe. Alessio Issupoff dedicated his whole life to art and was shaped by his years at the Moscow School of Painting, and later absorbed a great deal from Impressionism and the work of the Italian Renaissance masters. But he kept his distinctive style and remained true to the idea that excited the generation of painters of the turn of the 20th century — “the embodiment of the great beauty of everything alive.” Alexei Vladimirovich Isupov, known by his Italianized name Alessio Issupoff, was born in Vyatka (now Kirov) on March 10, 1889. The son of an icon carver and gilder, he learned to paint from the artisan painters who worked with his father. Wanting to give expression to his own artistic creativity, the young Alexei did not take up his father's trade but left Vyatka for Moscow where he attended the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His mentor was the painter Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, brother of Viktor, who introduced him to the Moscow artistic milieu and helped him find work. By studying and visiting museums, Issupoff formed his own aesthetic “taste” by modifying it on contemporary Russian and French Renaissance art...

Crucifixion, Antwerp, Flemish 16th century, oil on panel

Located in PARIS, FR

Crucifixion, studio of the Master of the Half-Figures (Antwerp, active 1500-1550), not signed Antwerp School, mid-16th century Oil on oak panel , h. 88 cm, w. 59 cm Original frame, framed: h. 98 cm, w. 68 cm A rare example of Antwerp painting from the first half of the 16th century, our Crucifixion captivates as much by the quality of its expansive river landscape as by the delicacy of its figures and the brilliance of its palette. The richness of the colors, the balance between devotion and narrative, and the subtlety of the atmospheric effects make it a particularly representative work of the artistic refinement developed in the workshop of the Master of the Half-Figures. Through its remarkable synthesis of the world-landscape inherited from Patinir and the expressive gentleness characteristic of the Master of the Half-Figures, this composition stands out as a particularly accomplished example of the Antwerp Flemish Renaissance. Our painting of the Crucifixion is organized around the central figure of Christ nailed to a high cross erected atop Golgotha. His slender, pale body stands out against a blue-green sky that lightens towards the horizon, creating an atmospheric depth characteristic of Flemish painting of this period. The bowed head, encircled by the crown of thorns, expresses agony in a restrained pose. The white loincloth, tied at the front according to a recurring motif in the work of the Master of the Half-Figures, has one end drawn between the legs before billowing outwards in a movement lifted by the wind, subtly animating Christ's silhouette. At the foot of the cross, a skull and a few bones evoke Adam and the redemption of humanity through Christ's sacrifice. To the left stands the Virgin Mary, enveloped in a flowing blue-green mantle whose heavy folds accentuate her contemplative posture. Her pale face, framed by a white veil, expresses silent sorrow. Kneeling at the center of the composition, Mary Magdalene embraces the cross in a gesture of fervent devotion, while to the right, Saint John, clad in a richly textured red cloak, gazes up at Christ, his hands folded across his chest. Contrary to the iconography typically found in 16th-century Antwerp workshops, he appears here as a bearded, middle-aged man. This relatively rare characteristic, however, is found in several works by the Master of the Half-Figures. The Virgin's face displays the typical characteristics of the Master of Half-Figures' repertoire : a high forehead, full cheeks, a rounded chin, and a gentle expression tinged with restrained melancholy. This youthful, feminine physiognomy is found in numerous depictions of Virgins, Magdalenes, and other saints from his workshop. The figures are also distinguished by their smooth complexions, elegant proportions, and attention to the richness of the fabrics, favoring formal refinement over dramatic expressiveness. The background unfolds according to the world-landscape formula inherited from Joachim Patinir. A vast panorama, blending a fortified city, estuary, winding paths, rocky outcrops, and bluish hills, stretches behind the sacred figures. At the heart of this lively river landscape, a small port, quays, and several boats also appear, their silhouettes punctuating the waterway and testifying to the attention paid by Antwerp painters to the commercial and maritime activities that ensured the city's prosperity. The composition is structured by a succession of narrative planes that invite the viewer's eye to move through the image as a continuous story, a technique characteristic of Antwerp painting in the first half of the 16th century. Behind the main scene appears the episode of the Carrying of the Cross, depicted by a group of soldiers and horsemen, with Golgotha rising on the mountain to the left, while to the right, in a grotto carved into the rocks, unfolds the Entombment of Christ. This multifaceted narrative, integrated into the landscape, enriches the meditative dimension of the work while highlighting its kinship with the inventions of Patinir. The attribution to the workshop of the Master of the Half-Figures seems all the more plausible given that several art historians, notably Robert Koch and Walter Gibson...

"Napoli 1889", Framed Oil Painting on Wood Panel, Neapolitan Harbor

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 25 x 31 x 4,5 cm Signed "Buono Napoli 1889" in lower left corner. This evocative harbor scene depicts the lively waterfront of Naples, capturing the city’s close relationship with the sea. Warm-toned buildings line the shoreline, their facades reflected in the gently rippling water, while a sailboat glides calmly across the harbor, anchoring the composition in a distinctly maritime atmosphere. Figures bathing and moving in the foreground introduce a sense of daily life and human presence, reinforcing the authenticity and intimacy of this Neapolitan coastal setting. The artist’s confident yet sensitive brushwork allows light and reflection to animate the surface of the water, creating a harmonious dialogue between architecture, figures, and sea. The palette of soft blues, earthy reds, and sunlit ochres evokes the Mediterranean climate and character of Naples, conveying both warmth and tranquility. This painting offers a timeless vision of harbor life in southern Italy, balancing architectural structure with fluid, atmospheric elements. A refined and atmospheric work, ideal for collectors of European harbor scenes, Mediterranean landscapes, and traditional maritime paintings. Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers 1930s Framed Provencal Côte d'Azur Oil Painting

Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers 1930s Framed Provencal Côte d'Azur Oil Painting

Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset

Gustave Vidal. French ( b.1895 - d.1966 ). Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers. Bord De Mer En Côte d'Azur. Oil On Panel. Signed Lower Right. Image size 12.4 inches x 15.6 inches ( 31.5cm x 39.5cm ). Frame size 22.2 inches x 26 inches ( 56.5cm x 66cm ). Available for sale, this original oil painting is by the French artist Gustave Vidal and dates from around 1935. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame. The original cotton slip has been replaced with a sympathetic contemporary slip that is in keeping with the fresh coastal aesthetic of the painting (which is shown in these photographs). This antique painting is in a good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Gustave Vidal was a 20th century French artist, and one of the best Provencal landscapers of his generation. He worked in the Provencal and Basque regions as well as Corsica and the centre of France. He was born in Avignon in 1895, in the Provence region of France, and died in the same town in 1966. Vidal trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. It is often reported that he studied under Pierre Grivolas, (1823-1906) who was a prominent teacher there who had encouraged plein air painting to capture light and colour directly from nature. However, Grivolas died when Vidal was only 9 or 10, so it is very unlikely that there was a direct teacher/student relationship between them in a formal apprenticeship or atelier setting. Pierre Grivolas had been a director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon until his death in 1906, and found what became known as the Nouvelle école d’Avignon, promoting outdoor practice and modern landscape painting. Grivolas influenced a generation of Provençal painters directly, and his teachings persisted after his death. Vidal therefore studied in the establishment that continued his ethos and would have been influenced by Grivolas’ directorship. Vidal won numerous awards at the Beaux-Arts in Avignon and became a sociétaire (member) of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, an important exhibition venue for French artists of the period. He actually wrote the articles of association for this establishment. As well as exhibiting in Avignon and Paris Vidal also exhibited in Berlin and Brussels. Vidal was primarily a landscape and marine painter. His work is associated with Provencal scenes — including rural landscapes, village streets, harbours, seascapes, and views of the French Riviera and interior France. His technique combined impasto application with both palette knife and brush, reflecting influences from Impressionism and post-Impressionist colourism encountered during his career, especially in Paris. This gives his canvases a textured, lively surface and strong sense of light and atmosphere. His works typically show rich colour and balanced composition, with evocative French light. Nowadays Vidal’s paintings appear regularly in antique galleries, auctions, and online sales in Europe and beyond, though he’s not commonly featured in major public museums or standard art history encyclopaedias. Auction results indicate steady interest among collectors of regional French painting, with prices varying according to size and subject. Although not among the most famous French painters of his generation, Gustave Vidal holds a solid place within early-to-mid-20th-century Provence painting, continuing the regional tradition of light, colour, and landscape that followed Impressionism, and appealing to contemporary collectors of Provençal and southern French art...

Promenade – Geometric Cubist Acrylic Painting on Wood, Earth Tones, 33 x 21cm

By Grégoire Mathias

Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR

Promenade Acrylic on wood 33.1 x 21.8 cm A compact yet striking cubist composition by French artist Grégoire Mathias, “Promenade” explores human figures through layered geometries and rich earth tones. “Promenade” is a refined, vertically oriented work in acrylic on wood panel by French artist Greg Mathias, a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism—an evolution of Cubism that doesn’t just fragment space, but also folds multiple moments in time into a single frame. In this composition, a solitary figure appears mid-step, portrayed through overlapping forms that subtly shift in posture and position, evoking successive instants of the same walk. Using a palette of earthy ochres, rose-beige tones, slate blues, and deep browns, Mathias blends geometric abstraction with temporal movement. The fractured background enhances the impression of both forward motion and layered time, suggesting the silent passage of moments within a single contemplative scene. Unlike traditional Analytical Cubism, which reduces forms to a still, spatial analysis, this piece embodies motion and transformation—hallmarks of the artist’s unique visual language. Compact in size but conceptually expansive, “Promenade” invites the viewer to witness the echo of steps already taken and those just about to occur. Perfect For: Interior designers sourcing vertical wall art...
