To begin this description, let me start with this question: Is it the internal side of things that is more important or is it what is presented to us visually? Naturally, the human notices the appearance of things and deals with things that have a direct connection with the senses without considering what is behind them. This makes one go directly to a materialist mindset. It is a mentality that drives one to consider things only from the surface while trapped in a corner in the judgment of only the shape of things observed. So I find the perfect way to describe my project, Primitive Life, as a process of connecting shapes from the internal cells of the human body from which comes the inner sociological forum of that body, expressing it visually and using color as harmony. While extracting the visual values, composing the forms of the cells and representing them in a new abstract way, I express the primitive side of life, concentrating on this often neglected part for the human experience/observation. This expression helps to create a community line of thinking and a social consciousness making it easier to find a common language for all human beings to understand and deal with each other. All the while knowing more about the special world of the artist and creating an arena of communication between the artist as the main subject and the community around him.
Born In Cairo 1987 Where He Currently Lives And Works. He Received His Bachelor’s Degree In Information Systems In 2008 From The Higher Institute Of Advanced Studies And Followed The Evening Classes (Painting Department)Of Fine Arts Faculty, Helwan University From 2005 To 2007. After His Graduation as an Information System Engineer, He Gave Up His Engineer Practices And Decided To Be An Independent Visual Artist. He Participated In Many Solo And Collaborative Exhibitions,Among Which; Nabokov Signs Exhibition In Etejah Gallery, Palace Of Arts In Cairo Opera House In 2016, Kamal Khalifa Gallery At The Gezira Art Center In 2012. Beit El Umma Gallery At Saad Zaghloul Center In 2012, Engy Aflaton Gallery In Cairo Atelier at 2010, Ahmed Nagy Gallery In Cairo Atelier In 2009, Tahya Halim Gallery In Cairo Atelier In 2008, Salon Of Youth Exhibition In Palace Of Arts From 2008 To 2015, The Mediterranean Symposium In 2010. ABOUT
“There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages.
“Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. Isaac Pelayo is a head on crash collision between The Renaissance and Street Art.
In a household where constant turmoil and violence were more apparent than most a young Pelayo met escape and peace within the confines of himself and his own creativity. Hispanic born in the heavy beating heart of Los Angeles on the seventh day of June 1996. Pelayo was caught in the crossfires of everything that surrounded him but art served as his only guidance. After dropping out of college Pelayo turned from his hyperrealistic pencil portraits to oil painting where his passions grew more immensely.
As of today Pelayo’s work is most influenced and fueled by the crème de la crème of old master painters like Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Velazquez as well as graffiti artists such as RETNA, Shepard Fairey, and EL MAC. In 2017 his work caught the attention and landed in the firm grasp of renown rapper and collector Alvin “Westside Gunn” Worthy. He has created several album covers and artworks for the Buffalo rap moguls music label Griselda Records including his personal collection. About the Artist: ALEX BOYD
Alex Boyd's images represent a major addition to the tradition of modern landscape photography" – Robert Macfarlane, Author
Alex Boyd is a landscape and documentary photographer, printmaker and writer. His work is primarily concerned with the Scottish landscape. As a photographer his work examines the role of early Scottish landscape photographers, often using antique processes such as the Victorian wet-plate collodion process using antique cameras in mountain environments.
He is best known for his conceptual and figurative landscape photography which explores concepts of Scottish identity through historical and contemporary romanticism, neo-romanticism, Romantic nationalism and Spirit of Place. His work is largely concerned with depictions of the Celtic landscape, conservation and remote places, and is often characterised by its stark, poetic and introspective qualities. In 2019 he was awarded a Daiwa Foundation Scholarship to work and photograph the mountains of the Japan Alps centred on Mount Yari as well as shortlisted for the Hariban Award. He was the Mountain Photographer of the Year at the Kendal Mountain Festival in 2013, the UK’s largest mountain festival. His work on the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye as the Royal Scottish Academy’s artist in Residence is in several National Collections. His work has been widely exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at the Scottish Parliament, as well as group exhibitions at the Royal Academy, Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy.
His work is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, The Royal Photographic Society, the Royal Scottish Academy, the V&A in London and the Yale Centre for British Arts in the USA. His first book St Kilda – The Silent Islands was recently shortlisted for a Saltire Award. His second book The Isle of Rust, a collaboration with writer Jonathan Meades was, like his first book, named as a photography book of the year by The Scotsman.
He is a Fellow of the National Library of Scotland, The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and the Royal Society of Art. He is currently working on a PhD on Scottish Photography at Northumbria University, a selection of new books on The Faroe Islands, The Outer Hebrides. A collection of his Scottish and Irish collodion work is due out in 2021 as well as a solo exhibition ‘Hesperus’ at Stills, Scotland’s Centre of Photography, in June 2020.
A contributing Arts Editor for The Island Review, Boyd has also written for Art North, The Modernist, Earthlines and many other publications.
