This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. This work was done on a section of the February 13, 2005 New York Times newspaper devoted to coverage of the Oscars -- with one part featuring an advertisement for the 2005 Warner Brothers film "Constantine", a Horror/Fantasy film featuring Keanu Reeves, who plays a demon hunter, and Rachel Weisz, who plays a policewoman in a supernatural plot based upon Hellblazer comics. Interestingly, more than two decades on, there is a sequel in the works - and the tag lines to the trailer for the Constantine 2 movie are: “Hell’s Not Just a Place, it’s a war” and “The world you’re fighting for, it’s as broken as you are. But what you’re up against now, it’s different…” The newsprint is deliberately imperfect, with natural undulations, tears to the corners, etc. - all a deliberate part of the artist's original aesthetic, and not later damage. If you want pristine, go elsewhere. This newspaper has been read, consumed, repurposed and recycled. The work itself has been floated and framed in a museum quality wood frame under plexiglass. Those were the days.." Josh Smith's 2005 exhibition "Make It Plain" at Reena Spaulings was an installation-based show that explored themes of artistic production, recycling, and the "material overload" of the painting process. The exhibition, which ran in April 2005, was characterized by an immersive, somewhat chaotic environment that combined painting with installation art. Key elements and themes of the show included: "Mirror" Paintings: The show featured large "mirror paintings," which were described as painted-over rejects or, in some contexts, canvases with abstract markings, featuring colorful traces on the edges suggesting frames around an opaque reflection. "Palette" Paintings: Smith included smaller "palette paintings" that displayed the raw,, sticky, and mixed pigments remaining from other, unseen works, highlighting the labor of painting. In the late 1930s, Charles Ramsey became close friends with Charles Evans and Louis Stone. He persuaded them to join him teaching his New Hope summer classes in non-objective painting. Soon, a history-making collaboration began. In 1937, meeting in Evans' studio at the rear of Cryer's Hardware store on Main Street in New Hope, a decision was made to establish the Co-Operative Painting Project. They were intrigued by the cooperative ad-lib process by which jazz musicians created their music. Believing this to be the quintessential American contribution to music, they theorized that a similar result might be obtainable with art, a "visual jam session." This particlarly fascinated Ramsey, who was a jazz buff and had a large collection of jazz records. The objective was to jointly collaborate in the creation of a painting as well as applying collective criticism during its creation. By creating forward movement by general consent, they believed they could produce a higher level of beauty. By consensus it was decided that subject matter would be non-objective. Up to eight people would participate and stop when the painting "felt" finished by common agreement. These co-operative works were done in several different mediums- the majority in pastel, but some in watercolor, gouache, graphite or cut paper collage. On occasion, the group would create a series, as opposed to a single work, created in steps by three or four artists. One of the occasional participants was famed New Hope poet, Stanley Kunitz. Inspired by the artists of the Modern Art era, including Post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne, Kang visualizes the modern day search for identity in an age where information and images permeate every aspect of contemporary life. Tae Ho Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1945. He studied at the College of Arts of Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. He later moved to California to study Fine Art at California State University, where he graduated in 1980. About his mixed media artworks, he remarks: “One day, when I was traveling, I was impressed by the beautiful scenery of the city under the sky, with many straight lines, curved lines, and harmonies of different colors, which seemed to be a magnificent orchestral performance. The beauty of this urban landscape gave me a deep impression and great change began to take place in my work. I wanted to be a molecule in this huge space.
