Cataloging Dalì

By Albert Field

Located in Roma, IT

L.T.S. (Lettre dactylographiée signée) Typewritten Letter Signed by Albert Field, on letter headed paper with double heading, central “The Salvador Dalì Catalog”, top right “Compiler Albert Field, 20-25 29th Street, Astoria 5, N.Y.” addressed to the Countess Anna Laetitia Pecci -Blunt. Dated 8th March 1958. One page (27.8 x 21.5 cm). In English. Perfect condition with usual folds in the paper. With some pencil and blue ink notes by the Countess. With this letter, in formal terms and on headed paper, Albert Field, as official compiler of Dalì's work, asks to the Countess make the catalogue complete with some information concerning "Instrument masochiste" and "Ossification prèmature d'une gare", bought by the Countess in 1934. The background: While the Catalonian artist was exhibiting his work at the National Gallery in Washington, he commissioned to Albert Field the creation of his Official Catalogue of Graphic Works, a guide to the artist’s works for collectors, dealers, gallery owners and museums: an opus magnum encompassing 40 years of production and comprising 1900 illustrations, of which 1500 in color. Albert Field was Dalí’s official archivist, besides the topmost authority regarding the artist’s work, who discovered approximately 17 types of falsification, as he reported to the St. Petersburg Times in 1987. Therefore, the catalog had the function of uncovering false Dalís scattered throughout the world. Nevertheless, Dalí himself reacted to the falsification phenomenon by saying: “Someone who is subjected to forgery the way I am must really be fantastically good''. An eccentric genius like Dalí thus found a kindred spirit in Mr. Field, an English, science, and maths teacher, as well as collector of playing cards, who had a passion for nudism and rambling, and who combined all of his interests by climbing the Appalachian Trail completely naked. At the sight of “Dream of Venus...

Autograph Letter Signed by Filippo de Pisis - 1947

By Filippo De Pisis

Located in Roma, IT

A Autograph Letter Signed by Filippo de Pisis accompanies a b/w photographic portrait (cm 11 x 9) of the young Italian artist, with his Basque-hat on his head, smoking a pipe and with his parrot on his shoulder. This composition, in perfect condition, is mounted under passepartout, plexiglass, and gilded frame (cm 40.5 x 2 x 54.5). The manuscript is addresses to Gaetano Chiurazzi. Venice, January 20th 1947. One page, single-sided. On letterhead paper “Ne nous embarbouillons pas dans les métaphores” (Balzac). cm 23 x 14.5. In 16°. In Italian. Signed “F. de Pisis”. Excellent condition, except for usual folds. Perfectly readable An affectionate greeting letter written with a rapid calligraphy by the artist had just returned to Italy, to Venice, after a short stay in Paris, with the first symptoms of a disease that will lead him to death. The artist writes to his friend, the Italian gallerist, Gaetano Chiurazzi (Naples,1899- Rome,1967), best-known as "Tanino". This letter will be delivered to Tanino by a great admirer and collector of de Pesis. A manuscript demonstrates how de Pisis spent his life: between Rome, Paris and Venice, living a very extravagant lifestyle; he had a pet parrot named Coco, and in Venice he was one of a handful of residents at the time who used a gondola. He had two personal gondoliers on 24-hour duty, who wore black-and-gold livery. Filippo de Pisis (born Luigi Filippo Tibertelli, Ferrara 1896 – Brugherio 1956) When he was 20 years old, the young painter from Ferrara had a meeting that changed his life. During his military service, he met the "Dioscuri", the brothers De Chirico and then Carrà. He was sure impressed by their way of seeing painting and, at the beginning, shared the metaphysical style. After a short stay in Rome and Paris, at the beginning of the 1920's, he started to rework his style, made of suggestions and original subjects, where the pictorial line is fragmented and, therefore, defined by Eugenio Montale as "fly-paw painting". The friendship with Julius Evola...

In 2012, Jason Chen shifted his long-running focus on dry plate tintypes to a new process: photo weaving. Chen began using two separate images of the same person, then wove them together in a process exploring time, movement, process, and mutation. He has exhibited works in the series one by one over the years, but in Fragments, his 2015 solo exhibition at Paradigm Gallery, a full collection of these works were on display together for the first time. Bio // Jason Chen is originally from Guangzhou, China. He received his BFA in Animation from the University of Arts in 2008. Rhapsody, hardback monograph (Hand signed and inscribed by Jennifer Bartlett)

By Jennifer Bartlett

Located in New York, NY

Jennifer Losch Bartlett Rhapsody (hand signed and inscribed), 1985 Hardback monograph with dust jacket (hand signed and inscribed to Nadine) Hand signed and inscribed in black marker "for Nadine" by Jennifer Bartlett on the half title page 12 × 12 × 1 inches Provenance signed for the present owner at Paula Cooper Gallery on January 21, 2016 This substantial, lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket, was hand signed by Jennifer Bartlett for the present owner at Paula Cooper Gallery on January 21, 2016. Makes an excellent gift Book information: Publisher‏: ‎ Harry N Abrams (November 1, 1985) English; Hardcover; 108 pages with color illustrations Editorial Review: Rhapsody'' is Bartlett's multi-part, multi-theme epic, a statement of the coming of age of an artist. A portable mural extended over 987 one-foot steel plates requiring 153 running feet of wall space, it is an enormous and infrequently mastered challenge to install and exhibit. In 1985-86, however, it will be on view in Minneapolis, Kansas City, Brooklyn, La Jolla, and Pittsburgh, and well worth a trip. In book form it becomes more available, with Smith's guided tour through sections, with Bartlett's notes giving conceptual coherence, and the opportunity to move from close-up to long view by turning a page. Rhapsody'' and this book afford a glimpse of a mind and art in action, a discovering and ordering process, an exciting demonstration of ways of growing and expressing the self and the world. Highly recommended. About Jennifer Bartlett: By the mid-1970s, Jennifer Bartlett (1941-2022, b. Long Beach, California) had emerged as a leading American artist of her time—particularly following the landmark presentation at Paula Cooper Gallery of Rhapsody (1976), Bartlett’s magnum opus, now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Philadelphia, among others. In 2006, the Addison Gallery of American Art surveyed Bartlett’s early enameled steel plate paintings in the period from 1968–76. In 2013-14, Klaus Ottmann curated her second traveling survey, which visited the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum, New York. In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art united her three monumental plate...
