Surrealist Large Painting Royal College of Art LGBTQ+ Female Blue Water Sea

By Isabel Rock

Located in Norfolk, GB

Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024. Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you, that that you decide to follow. Artwork Details: Call of the Sea, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Call of the Sea: The sea was calling, calling its sirens song. It threw tempting little waves flirtatiously on the shore. 'Come,' it said, 'come.' The sea glittered with promise, it whispered sweet nothings as it rolled the tiny gem pebbles on the beach. 'Come to me,' it said, 'I will show you the world, the true meaning of life.' The people felt the pull, the blood pumping in their veins, like a magnet they were drawn towards the sea. Mesmerised, bewitched, they stripped of their clothes, leaving them in molehills on the beach. The breeze caressed bare bottoms, free from the constraints of life. They stepped cautiously at first but as excitement overwhelmed them they broke into a run as they neared the water. The sea tickled their toes and beckoned them in, making sweet promises of delightful pleasures. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Whilst the work is on heavy duty art paper and mixed media, the artist is happy that the painting will be rolled. This is a more cost effective and environmentally sound method of shipping. Shipping via this method is free. About Isabel Rock and her work: Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations. Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel...

By Adeniyi Joshua Adetayo

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

In "Backyard," the central figure—a woman—commands attention against a backdrop of natural beauty. She stands in her own space, seemingly lost in thought, creating an atmosphere of both stillness and introspection. Adetayo's portrayal of this woman invites viewers to consider the emotions and thoughts that might be coursing through her mind. Is she reflecting on memories? Contemplating her place in the world? The interpretation becomes a personal journey for each observer. The landscape that envelops the woman is not just a passive backdrop but a powerful metaphor. Just as the external world shapes our internal experiences, the landscape symbolizes the myriad influences that contribute to one's sense of self. The woman's connection to the environment around her mirrors the intricate relationship between identity and surroundings. The notion of a "backyard" often evokes a sense of familiarity and intimacy. It is a space that is uniquely personal, and this artwork invites us to ponder what this personal space means for the woman depicted. In much the same way, we are all shaped by our own "backyards"—our histories, cultures, and experiences that come together to form our individual identities. The tranquility of the artwork encourages viewers to embrace the beauty of stillness and contemplation. In a world that often moves at breakneck speed, "Backyard" reminds us of the value of taking a moment to disconnect, reflect, and connect with our own thoughts and emotions. The woman's posture, relaxed and poised, suggests that she is attuned to this moment of quiet introspection. Adetayo's choice to depict a woman adds an additional layer of significance. Historically, women have been portrayed as subjects of scrutiny and objectification, often with their thoughts and emotions overlooked. "Backyard" challenges this norm by presenting a woman as the focal point of a scene that radiates depth and complexity. While "Backyard" is a singular artwork with a specific subject, its themes resonate universally. Regardless of gender or background, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on their own personal landscapes, the spaces they occupy, and the introspective moments that shape their lives. Adetayo's ability to capture such universal themes while maintaining a unique and personal touch is a testament to the power of art to bridge gaps and foster connections across diverse audiences. But just as you stride down the street with a spring in your step the wheel turns another click and you find yourself on the down again. Maybe you lost your wallet, made a mistake that cost you alot of money or your partner met someone more interesting. Artwork Details: Tom Yum Yum, 142x121.5cm, ink, mixed media and acrylic paint on paper, 2013 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Tom Yum Yum Of the King prawns, the normal prawns and the shrimps, all prawns were equal when they were in the soup. There was no monarchy in the hot volcanic bubbles of the boiling tasty soup. All the prawns had regrets, some more than others. Some regretted they had spent more time with their prawn spawn, others that they had been kinder to their friends, it all seemed rather trivial now, the petty jealousies, the rivalry, the endless striving to get ahead, trying to find the best mating partner. None of it really mattered as the soupy steam engulfed them. 'We had a good time,' shouted one valiant King prawn, 'I did my best,' came a high squeak of a shrimp. 'I tried to be content with what I had, that's all that matters but it is hard when constantly bombarded with images of others success,' said a thoughtful prawn. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Just one of those days when everything goes right and the world is an exciting place. The very pavements seemed to be alive with magical stories to tell of the many feet that had trampled upon them. Everything seemed right with the world because I was going to meet my friend for a glass of wine. You know that friend who just gets you? Surrealist Large Painting Royal College Art LGBTQ+ Female Blue Birds Paradise

Artwork Details: Paradise Island, 148x111.5cm, ink, acrylic paint and mixed media on paper, 2013 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Paradise island It truly was paradise on paradise island. No plastic bottles touched these shores, no human hand had exploited the rich minerals and resources of the land, no complicated administrative tasks affected the residents. The birdmen who lived there were united in one common purpose, and that was to wait for The Egg. They waited day and night in a fever of excitement, hours and days and sometimes weeks went past and they did not grow weary, this only increased their anticipation. They stretched their arms to the sky and called for The Egg to bless them by falling. Deep in the hearts of the birdmen was a thing never spoken of and rarely even aknowledged to themselves, a common secret, that when The Egg actually fell it was not as good as the anticipation of it. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Whilst the work is on heavy duty art paper and mixed media, the artist is happy that the painting will be fine rolled in a tube. An essential tool is a squirrel’s hair brush that gives incredible fine lines and was purchased on her travels in India. Born in Hammersmith, London in 1981, Rock knew her destiny was to be an artist. Studying Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton and graduating with First Class Honours in 2004 she went on to do a Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art in London, continuing her studies in printmaking and drawing, graduating in 2008. Her first solo show at Bearspace Gallery in Deptford, London in April 2009 sold out and was the beginning of a career that continues to rise. Rock participated in the first ever India Art Fair represented by Art 1821...

Artwork Details: Isabel Rock , 'Staring at the Sun' 99.7 x 70.2cm, collaged woodblock print and acrylic ink on 410gsm Somerset Satin paper, 2011 In Isabels own words; 'Staring at the Sun' The man stood on the mountain and stared at the golden sun. The sun stared back at him, its heat blazed and burnt his eyes, the birds sang a maddening tune like they were pecking at his eardrums. The man pointed his finger and shouted, ' you lied to me' at the sun. The sun laughed and said 'you wanted to believe me. I told you what you had already decided in your head to be the most convenient thing for you.' The man raged and hopped in what looked to the birds like a beautiful dance. 'Trickery, skulduggery!' he shouted. 'villain, thief, abomination!' The sun blinked and smiled calmly. It had seen a lot from humans, there was nothing that could surprise it now. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube.
