Jenny Toth
Donkey Boogie Woogie, limited color mixed media woman animals

2016

About the Item

This is drawing made with pen, pencil and watercolor on wood done from life of donkeys the artist observed in Mexico, and cacti, and a woman holding up the hoof of one donkey. Whimsical and light hearted yet the animals and artist seem to be thinking of deeper things. Known for painting fantastical, sometimes self-reflective narrative scenes with a touch of humor, Jenny Toth works from direct observation, sometimes with the aid of elaborate set-ups and props. Typically, the scenes she transcribes onto canvas or paper constitute a variation on self-portraiture, stemming from her interest in how women choose to portray themselves versus how male artists have traditionally depicted them including “flaws” like a deformed toe or hairy legs underscores her premium on honesty over vain attempts at conforming to conventional beauty standards. Through portraits of herself hiding behind a cactus, a fisherman’s net, or a mask, Toth explores themes of inner struggle, fear of loneliness, and wariness of intimate commitment. Later her work includes the joys and frustrations of motherhood and complex feelings depicted with animals as a source.

  • Rope the Moon
    By Jennifer Lowe
    Located in Denver, CO
This is an illustrative mixed media piece on paper. It features a cowgirl riding a horse at night. She is lassoing a crescent moon. There are swirling, abstracted stars in the night sky. In the background are dark mountains with red bands from the sunset below. The horse is tan and galloping. The piece is framed. Jennifer Lowe has combined the landscapes, animals and the people of her native Montana with a unique approach to painting. Born in Missoula, Jennifer spent parts of her childhood working in the fields of her grandparent's homestead property in Montana's Grasshopper Valley. Lowe's paintings are rendered in the vivid color and rich texture of livestock markers and capture the whimsical images from her imagination and the memories of her Montana upbringing. Jennifer began using the oil paintsticks in 1985 while a student at Montana State University. Since graduating in 1987, Lowe has been shown alongside such well know western artists as Thorn Ross, Howard Post...
